(Sr) Manager, Patient Advocay (m/f/d)

Summary:
Responsible for developing and implementing an integrated strategy for Biogen´s goal of engaging with patient advocacy and other related stakeholders around projects that improve health outcomes in neurological, autoimmune and rare diseases: focus on patient with empathy and the ability to “care deeply”; cultivate alliances, partnership opportunities and advocacy in response to patient needs; and effectively communicate Biogen’s position on relevant public health, economic, clinical, political and disease-related issues to relevant stakeholders. Raising the company’s profile through developing communication strategies targeted towards various patient advocacy groups in MS, Alzheimers, SMA and other rare disease areas/new products.

Embedded in Corporate Affairs Team, Germany, reporting solidly to Head of Corporate Affairs, Germany. Working location is Biogen office in Munich. The role requires strong collaboration and networking across the organization (Medical, Market Access, Commercial, Governmental Affairs, international colleagues) while able to lead and work independently.

Main Responsibilities:

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Identify and develop strong relationships with critical patient advocacy stakeholders to advance common interests relating to Biogen’s disease areas.
  • Act as the company representative for patient advocacy organizations, maintain and enhance relationships with key patient advocacy partners,
  • Develop and implement projects and activities with patient advocacy groups and other related stakeholders to improve the standard of care in Germany, educate patient groups and to support market access, pricing & reimbursement and Government Affairs efforts.

Alliance Development:

  • Act as the key alliance development representative for the German market on behalf of Biogen. Build and establish relationships with groups focused on Biogen´s pre-launch therapeutic areas of interest.
  • Work in close cooperation and alignment with the European PAG team
  • Align goals and strategies to support the cross-functional team´s objectives

Communications:

  • Alignment and cross-functional engagement within Biogen Germany and on an international level
  • Contribute to development of strategic recommendations and tactical plans for implementation on a local level including stakeholder maps and engagement plans

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; ideally in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a degree in liberal arts or life sciences. 
  • 5 plus years professional experience and strong business acumen in the public/corporate affairs arena within a Life Sciences context; pharma/biotech industry must have, experience in neuroscience (esp. specialty & rare disease market) preferred
  • Experience within patient advocacy in an agency, corporation or NGO in the biopharmaceutical industry on a local/international level is preferred
  • Experience working in matrix organizations and with global functions; strong executive presence; proven ability to effectively and appropriately work with and influence senior management
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in strategy and execution and flexible to find the right balance in working strategically and operationally work; agile & hands-on mentality; ability to work well under pressure and enjoys a fast-paced, often unpredictable environment; outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to successfully influence without authority, and effectively work across functions and personalities, strong collaboration skills 
  • Ability to lead project groups and cross-functional teams. Demonstrated good judgment and ability to effectively prioritize work load
  • Excellent follow-through, attention to detail and high sense of urgency
  • Excellent command of German and English
