Job Description
The Sustainability Manager is anticipated to effectively implement the Project Sustainability Management System and relevant measures to comply with Project Sustainability requirements (Envision, GHG Emission reduction, Net Zero, etc.), in coordination with Project Stakeholders (Client, Consultant, Project Team, Subcontractors, Suppliers, etc.), documenting and reporting the same to the relevant parties.
He/ She will report to the Technical Manager for Sustainability-related matters and to the Project HSE Manager for Environmental Sustainability-related matters.
Main duties and responsibilities are:
- Implement & monitor all Project Sustainability requirements and plan related processes/activities at the Project.
- Review & approve Material Submittals to ensure compliance with Project Sustainability requirements.
- Coordinate with the Client, Consultants, relevant project members/subcontractors to ensure full implementation, and ensure the Project complies with all Project Sustainability requirements during Construction phase to achieve the targeted Sustainability rating.
- Gather, compile, and generate all the Sustainability related documentation/data required during Construction stage, from all the parties involved, for further submissions to the client or relevant authorities/certifying bodies.
- Prepare Sustainability reports, as required by the Project Stakeholders.
- Conduct appropriate inspections/site walks to ensure compliance with the Project Sustainability requirements i.e. CIAQ, Carbon reduction, Construction Waste Management, Soil & erosion Prevention, etc.
- Attend/lead Progress Meetings, Subcon Meetings, etc., as required for Project Sustainability aspects.
- Conduct frequent Workshops/Trainings for the Project Team to ensure awareness of Project Sustainability requirements.
- Implement an effective GHG emission reduction management system, ensuring that the project meets the targeted carbon reduction rate.
- Be the Subject Matter Expert for Sustainability related matters, guiding the Project team to consider value creation ideas, sustainable Solutions, and approaches that comply with the Project Sustainability requirements.
- Coordinate closely with technical, Procurement and Operations teams, to ensure the materials used and the construction approach aligns with the Project Sustainability requirements.
- Work closely with the Project Environmental Manager and the HSE team, to ensure all Environmental Sustainability related measures are implemented to a high standard and in line with Project Sustainability requirements.
- Keep up to date with industry developments, research and propose sustainable value creation ideas with supporting business cases to the Project Management team. Implement and conduct impact assessments.
- Develop case studies and communications re Sustainability practices at the Project, for internal and external reporting.
- Engage with local communities to address concerns, promote sustainability, and contribute to social and economic development.
- Assess materials in terms of embodied carbon and assist procurement in adhering with the Project Carbon reduction targets.
Competencies:
- Stay informed and comply with Saudi Arabian environmental and sustainability regulations.
- Have sound knowledge to identify, assess, monitor and manage Carbon Emissions, Embodied Carbon in Materials, air emissions, water/ wastewater collection, treatment/ disposal and energy consumption.
- Navigate cultural nuances to communicate sustainability goals effectively in alignment with local values and practices.
- Construction industry Expertise
- Able to design and implement long-term sustainability strategies.
- Efficiently manage sustainability projects from conception to completion, within established goals and timelines.
- Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government entities, local communities, suppliers, and employees.
- Collaborate with different departments, such as procurement, operations, and marketing, to integrate sustainability practices into various aspects of the business.
- Foster a culture of innovation by identifying and implementing new technologies and practices that enhance sustainability efforts.
- Anticipate and mitigate potential sustainability risks, such as regulatory changes, resource scarcity, and reputational issues.
- Use data analytics to measure and report on key sustainability metrics, providing insights that inform decision-making.
- Evaluate and improve the sustainability performance of the supply chain, considering the environmental and social impacts of suppliers.
- Develop strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change and enhance the organization's resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
- Stay informed about global sustainability trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of sustainable business practices.
- Must have good analytical skills and reporting/presentation skills.
Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, or Civil Engineering or Architecture or equivalent from a reputable university.
- Must have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the Sustainability field in the GCC and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in managing LEED or Envision Projects, and their documentation.
- Envision ENV SP and LEED AP accredited professional are mandatory.
- Must be proficient in implementing Sustainability-related requirements (Envision, Carbon reduction, Energy reduction, Water reduction, etc.) in Construction operations.
- Must have in-depth knowledge of topics like GHG Emissions reduction, Embodied Carbon, Life Cycle Analysis, etc.
- Prior Experience in KSA is a plus.
- Fluent in English, Arabic is a plus.
- Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
