This position provides Sustainability leadership to two high-growth business units in Vestcom (Vestcom.com) and Identification Solutions (IdentificationSolutions.AveryDennison.com)

ABOUT THE ROLE

Identification Solutions and Vestcom are growth businesses within the Avery Dennison portfolio that provide identification, supply chain, and labeling solutions within the food, logistics, and retail industries. Sustainability is a value add in our solutions approach with our customers in addition to being one of Avery Dennison’s core values. 

We are seeking a candidate with deep sustainability knowledge and hands-on experience in developing and incorporating sustainability into our market-based solutions and within our own internal operations. In this role, you will partner with the VP/GM of the Identification Solutions and Vestcom businesses and their respective leadership teams to advance, elevate, align, and execute Avery Dennison’s sustainability vision and strategy globally, while creating value for the business.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a framework to implement the Avery Dennison sustainability strategy into Vestcom and Identification Solutions. 
  • Build organizational capability and accountability for furthering our sustainability efforts. 
  • Develop a customer engagement strategy around sustainability, with a strong focus on creating value and solving market challenges. 
  • Partner with the Avery Dennison sustainability teams to execute against the existing 2025 and 2030 sustainability metrics.
  • Embed sustainability principles into short and long-range business planning, capital planning and operations planning.
  • Work with innovation, product line managers, operations, procurement, and other key stakeholders to ensure sustainability strategy is implemented, monitored, and reported.
  • Work with innovation, product line managers, operations, procurement and other key stakeholders to develop and implement roadmaps to improve sustainability and de-carbonize solutions.
  • Develop ecosystem partnerships where appropriate to leverage and support the business units case around sustainability.
  • Conduct life cycle assessments of materials used in our devices to identify areas of improvement, assess environmental impact, and propose sustainable alternatives.
  • Stay informed about evolving environmental regulations and industry standards, ensuring the company remains compliant and adheres to best practices.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on sustainability metrics, progress, and initiatives to senior management and stakeholders, showcasing the company's commitment to sustainability.
  • Organize workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns to educate employees about sustainability practices and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.  
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including innovation product designers, engineers, and internal environmental experts, to develop clear and comprehensive sustainability guidelines for product design. These guidelines should encompass principles of eco-design, circular economy concepts, and specific sustainability targets.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainability, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus. Minimum 5+ years leadership experience in the field.
  • Proven experience in sustainability management, preferably in the technology industry or materials manufacturing sector.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable material science, circular economy principles, and environmental impact assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders across business units and functions in developing and executing strategy and key initiatives.
  • Excellent understanding of sustainability concepts and frameworks, specifically de-carbonization and scope 3.
  • Demonstrated ability of effectively engaging with customers at a senior level.
  • Excellent organizational and people skills, project management skills, with an ability to openly convey information to team members in a timely, concise manner.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills for high-level interaction with other functions and customers. 
  • Excellent communication, presentation and facilitation skills, including communicating and marketing sustainable efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change, influence stakeholders, and implement sustainable practices across an organization.
  • Highly analytical, can synthesize information and offer recommendations/solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others.
  • Strong leadership skills.  Ability to lead, contribute, and influence others in a team-based organization, and lead a team of people
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with cross-functional business teams within our global network and with external parties.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with stakeholders of multiple levels, within and outside the company.
  • Possesses exceptional abilities to navigate uncertainty and drive sustainability initiatives amidst evolving challenges.
