Job Description
The IP Counsel will provide the full spectrum of intellectual property legal services to the Retail Branding Information Solutions (RBIS) businesses of Avery Dennison. The RBIS group is organized in three businesses namely Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Printer Systems and Apparel Solutions.
The services to be provided include
Client counseling; drafting technology development and licensing contracts; trade secret protection, and patent and trademark protection, surveillance, enforcement and litigation
Drafting patent applications and responses to office actions , liaising with inventors, internal IP lawyers, agents, staff, and foreign counsel to obtain the information needed to prepare and successfully prosecute patent applications.
Contributing to the global IP strategy that targets growth in key market segments and accelerates new product innovations
Conducting patent novelty, validity and right to market studies, patent and information searches, and analyzing and summarizing search results.
The IP counsel is a member of Avery Dennison’s global law department ultimately reporting to the GC. The IP counsel reports directly to the Senior Group IP Counsel. The position is based in Mentor, Ohio.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, or science background e.g. biology, chemistry, computer science or physics
J.D. and a member of the bar in at least one state with 2+ years patent law experience including IP related transactions, patent drafting and prosecution
Strong business acumen, and ability to connect the law and legal strategies to business goals in a way that guides clients to successful outcomes
Proven experience with IP transactions, trademarks and copyrights
Strongly preferred
Registration with the USPTO
Strong working knowledge of and experience with PCT, European patent practice, and other foreign patent practice
Prior professional success working in matrix organizations with global footprint
