Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic student assistant(s) to join our community garden team. As a Community Garden Student Assistant, you will play a crucial role in growing food for our Campus Cupboard Food Shelf, maintaining the communal garden plot, planning events, and fostering a sense of community among our diverse population. This position involves physical labor, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and collaborating closely with the Garden Coordinator and community members from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all aspects of garden maintenance, including planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting.
  • Work closely with the Garden Coordinator to plan and organize community garden events and activities.
  • Engage with members of the community from diverse backgrounds and cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the garden.
  • Participate in garden operations such as composting, soil preparation, and pest management.
  • Utilize problem-solving skills to address challenges that arise in garden operations.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, supporting and communicating with colleagues and community members to achieve shared goals.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Rate of Pay: $16.45/hour
  • Minnesota Sick and Safe Time
  • Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave
  • Not eligible for health insurance benefits
     

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for community gardening and a passion for sustainable agriculture.
  • Ability to carry-out physical tasks including lifting heavy objects, bending, kneeling, and working outdoors for extended periods.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Basic knowledge of gardening practices and an eagerness to learn new skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
  • Experience working in a team environment and collaborating with others towards common objectives.
  • Must be enrolled as an Augsburg University student

  • This is a part-time position suitable for students with a flexible schedule.
