Kumba Iron Ore
We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
Job Description
As Field Ranger - Game your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Apply occupational health and safety standards across wildlife, infrastructure, and hospitality operations.
Game Management
- Maintain feeding schedules and manage stock supplies.
- Ensure continuous water supply for animals.
- Safeguard animal health through monitoring and interventions.
- Facilitate hunting activities in compliance with regulations.
- Oversee slaughtering, caping, and trophy management.
- Conduct weaning, marking, and relocation of animals.
- Track and monitor wildlife movements and conditions.
- Maintain accurate biological asset registers and records.
Infrastructure Maintenance
- Inspect and repair fencing (structural and electrical).
- Construct new fences as required.
- Maintain water systems, including pumps, dams, pipes, waterholes, and troughs.
- Oversee gate operations and maintenance.
- Maintain and repair roads within the reserve.
- Ensure upkeep of bomas.
Monitoring and Emergency Response
- Implement and oversee security protocols.
- Respond to fire, flood, and other natural emergencies.
- Manage incidents involving people.
Hospitality
- Monitor and maintain lodge facilities and services.
- Prepare basic meals and assist with food-related activities.
- Support events such as game viewing and team-building activities.
This role is in Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) department on a Band P4 (C-Lower) level reporting to the Farm Supervisor.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- National Higher Qualification in Agriculture/Game Farming or similar on NQF4
- Valid hunting rifle license.
- Professional Hunter registration will be advantageous.
- Minimum code EC1 driver’s license with a valid PDP.
Technical Knowledge
- Understand principles of wildlife ecology, animal husbandry, and conservation.
- Demonstrate proficiency in veterinary basics for disease prevention and monitoring.
- Understand infrastructure systems: fencing, water supply, pumps, dams, pipes, roads, bomas.
- Demonstrate proficiency in SHE legislation (OHS Act, Environmental Management Act, Biodiversity Act).
- Understand emergency response frameworks (firefighting, flood management, security protocols).
- Demonstrate proficiency in lodge and hospitality operations within a reserve.
- Understand administrative systems: biological asset registers, reporting, and digital record keeping.
