This role is based at Valterra’s Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory in Pretoria.
Job Description
The role is responsible for performing tasks in an area of a section in accordance with Work Instructions and executing instructions issued by their senior in order to produce accurate and timeous results. The role also supports the Laboratory Technician / Shift Leader in optimizing and continually improving the operation of the section.
- Performance and Delivery
Work Management
- Work strictly according to Work Instructions and Quality control standards
- Produce timeous and accurate results
- Consistently apply Safety, Health, Environmental and Good Housekeeping standards
- Sample receiving and registering
- Sample taking/collection, labelling and log-in
- Sample preparation: drying, crushing, splitting, pulverizing, milling, siebing, mixing, filtering, weighing, fluxing, composting, and storage
- Furnace room operations: fusion, low temperature cupellation, high temperature cupellation, prill picking, cleaning, and weighing prills
- Particle size analysis
- XRF pellet preparation
- Calculation of results
- Na2O2 fusions
- Safe handling / changing of gas cylinders
- Pipetting, Dilution and Leaching
- NiS button milling
- Forklift, hoist, tractor, and light vehicle driving
- Removal and disposal of waste
- Pressure Dissolution
- Electrolysis
- Purity / Activity testing of reagents
- Titrations and Autotitration
- pH and conductivity measurements
- Redox Measurements
- Fetching chemicals/reagents/fluxes from stores
- Stores issuing and receiving stocks monitoring
- Replenish of chemicals / reagents
- Trace element analysis
- General cleaning of machines
- Locked input device operation
- Operation of the Bagging Machine
Sustainability & Social
- Support delivery of the relevant BU and Group sustainability initiatives and activities
- Input into AAP Business Unit-level cross-functional integration on sustainability
- Contribute to building relationships with key stakeholders relevant to Corporate Affairs at both Operational and Business Unit level, ensuring engagements are consistent with Business Unit and Group sustainability initiatives and standards
Qualifications
- Grade 12 with Maths & Science
Experience:
- Minimum 6 months experience as a Laboratory Processor Grade 2
Technical knowledge (experience) required for role:
- Monitoring of benchmarks and identification of performance gaps
- Local language skills and appreciation of local culture
- Delivery of safe operational performance over 1–3-month time horizon
- Establishment of a culture within team in which safety and health is paramount and that results in zero fatalities
