Job Description
De Beers Group Canada has an opportunity for highly motivated and energetic Water Management Specialist. Reporting to the Environment and Permitting Superintendent, the role is based within the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Training department. This position will be involved in all aspects of the environmental program for the mine, with a particular focus on water. The Water Management Specialist will be instrumental in leading Life-of-Mine and mid-range water management planning for the Gahcho Kue Mine. The role will manage the complex environmental database and creating technical reports for internal and external stakeholders. The Water Management Specialist will work with field staff, consultants, and environmental laboratories with the objective of ensuring all relevant data is entered into the database and maintained with necessary quality assurance. The ideal candidate is one who has a keen eye for continuous improvement opportunities, can quickly build relationships with key stakeholders, and one who is committed to safe work practices, while striving for zero harm.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead Life-of-Mine and mid-range water management planning;
- Lead water balance and water quality model development and maintenance;
- Manage and direct water balance and quality databases;
- Lead water management plan and procedure development and maintenance;
- Manage water management consultants in surface water and groundwater model development and report preparation;
- Manage and organize laboratory, field, and instrumentation environmental data while ensuring quality and consistency;
- Creation of application-specific datasets for internal and external reporting and short and long-term trending;
- Providing technical support to users of an environmental data management software suite;
- Collecting, compiling, and analyzing site water monitoring data including but limited to lake elevations, river flows, pumping records, and water quality;
- Assisting with the management of all internal and external environmental reporting requirements;
- Assist in developing standards and procedures for data management process improvements;
- Actively communicate and coordinate with project managers, laboratories, and/or other team members toacquire data packages of varying formats to be imported to a centralized database system; and
- Support digital transformation projects by enabling technical teams to more efficiently collect and manage field data using digital platforms.
The position is based at the Calgary Support Centre located at the Calgary Airport Corporate Centre, with regular travel (one week per month) to the mine site. The Calgary office currently works a hybrid schedule, Monday to Friday with both in-office days and working from remotely from home.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, geoscience, chemistry, hydrology, hydrogeology, or equivalent;
- Post-graduate degree and relevant professional designation would be considered an asset;
- Five (5) years of water management experience, preferably in the environmental consulting or mining sectors;
- Proficiency in writing technical reports;
- Experience in environmental assessment, permitting and regulatory compliance in mining or related industries;
- Ability to simplify complex datasets and present them comprehensibly to relevant stakeholders;
- Experience with EHS MonitorPro, GoldSim, Power BI and other data management & modeling tools.
- Advanced skills with Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and familiarity with databases;
- Possess sound judgment, planning, problem solving and decision making abilities;
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to write technical reports;
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and productively; and
- Preference will be given to Members of the Deninu Kué, Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation, North Slave Métis Alliance, Northwest Territory Métis Nation, Tlicho Government, or Yellowknives Dene First Nation, followed by non-indigenous residents of the Northwest Territories.
