As Director of Engineering and a member of the Executive Committee, you will provide strategic leadership for the Engineering department, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of one of Canada's most recognized heritage hotels. You'll lead a talented team, oversee major capital projects, champion sustainability initiatives, and collaborate with hotel leaders to deliver exceptional guest experiences while preserving the character and integrity of this historic landmark.

What You'll Lead

You'll provide strategic leadership while ensuring operational excellence across all engineering functions.

Strategic Leadership

• Lead the Engineering department as a member of the Executive Committee.
• Develop and execute the department's strategic priorities aligned with hotel, ownership, and brand objectives.
• Foster a high-performing culture built on engagement, accountability, innovation, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Coach, mentor, and develop future engineering leaders through succession planning and ongoing professional development.

Engineering Operations

• Oversee the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all building systems, including HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, and building automation systems.
• Ensure the effective delivery of preventive maintenance programs across guestrooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory, environmental, occupational health and safety, and Fairmont brand standards.
• Champion operational excellence by ensuring Engineering consistently supports exceptional guest and colleague experiences.

Capital Planning & Asset Management

• Develop and execute the hotel's long-term capital plan and asset management strategy.
• Lead major renovations, infrastructure improvements, and engineering projects while minimizing operational disruption.
• Identify opportunities to improve building performance, sustainability, efficiency, and return on investment.
• Collaborate closely with ownership representatives, consultants, contractors, and project partners.

Financial & Business Leadership

• Prepare and manage the annual Property Operations, Maintenance & Energy Costs (POMEC) budget.
• Monitor expenditures, forecasts, utility consumption, and energy performance while identifying opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
• Negotiate and manage vendor contracts to ensure quality, value, and service excellence.

People Leadership & Labor Relations

• Lead, coach, and inspire a skilled unionized Engineering team to achieve operational and service excellence.
• Foster positive labor relations through the fair and consistent administration of the Collective Agreement while building collaborative relationships with union representatives.
• Promote colleague engagement, recognition, development, and retention while cultivating an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

Sustainability & Safety

• Champion environmental sustainability initiatives that support Accor's sustainability commitments and the hotel's environmental objectives.
• Promote a strong culture of safety through compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, hotel policies, and safe work practices.
• Lead emergency preparedness planning and Engineering support during operational incidents and business continuity events.

Collaboration

• Partner closely with leaders across Rooms, Food & Beverage, Housekeeping, Security, Finance, Sales & Marketing, and other departments to support seamless hotel operations.
• Represent Engineering during Executive Committee meetings, audits, inspections, and strategic planning initiatives.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with ownership representatives, regulatory authorities, contractors, consultants, and key service providers.

What We’re Looking For

• Required: Valid British Columbia Fourth Class Power Engineer Certificate; Second- or Third-Class Power Engineer Certificate considered a strong asset.
• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum five (5) years of progressive engineering leadership experience within a luxury hotel, hospitality environment, or comparable complex facility.
• Demonstrated success leading and developing teams within a unionized environment, including experience interpreting and administering collective agreements and fostering positive labor relations.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life-safety, building automation, and energy management systems.
• Experience leading capital projects, asset management planning, and preventive maintenance programs.
• Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and cost management.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), AutoCAD, and project management software is an asset.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, coach, and develop high-performing teams.
• Strong understanding of British Columbia Occupational Health & Safety legislation, building codes, fire codes, and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, guest-focused luxury hospitality environment.

Schedule & Operational Expectations

• Participate in a rotating weekend coverage schedule (Saturdays and Sundays)
• Be available to respond to off-hours emergencies, including overnight and on scheduled days off

Working Environment

• Hands-on leadership role requiring mobility throughout a large, historic property
• Regular physical activity, including lifting (up to 50 lbs) and navigating ladders and stairs
• Occasional work in mechanical rooms, confined spaces, and elevated areas
• Fast-paced environment supporting a 24/7 luxury hotel operation
• Occasional exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, chemicals, and emergency situations
• Collaborate and lead effectively within the framework of a collective agreement
