Job Description

The following are major duties, tasks, and responsibilities that commonly make up the mason worker job description in most organizations:

  • Ensuring that surfaces are well-prepared before beginning a job
  • Supervising the fabrication; maintaining, altering, and repairing of walls, sidewalks, street curbs, floors, sink counters, bathroom showers, and other related structures or surfaces
  • Carrying out the estimation of materials and labor
  • Operating equipment such as a forklift, dump truck, and flatbed
  • Reading blueprints and drawings to accurately calculate materials needed
  • Making sure all expansion joints are filled with appropriate caulking materials
  • Ensuring that surfaces are cleaned and polished with the necessary hand or power tools
  • Laying out patterns, forms, or foundations following plans
  • Maintaining a neat and tidy work area after completing a job
  • Staying up to date with all safety procedures and regulations, and following them rigorously.

Qualifications

  • Profound knowledge and familiarity with relevant tools, masonry techniques, and equipment
  • Adequate skill and experience in the construction, alteration, repair, and maintenance of masonry structures and surfaces
  • Physical stamina, as a mason worker must keep a steady pace while setting bricks, since constant lifting can be tiring
  • Physical strength which enables him/her to lift heavy objects, as a mason worker is expected to be strong enough to lift more than 50 pounds
  • Good mathematical and problem-solving skills which enable him/her to identify, analyze and solve problems or any arising issues
  • Dexterity and precision, which enables a mason worker to lay bricks, stones, and other materials effectively, and place them with precision
  • At least a High School diploma or equivalent, and taking courses or apprenticeship training.
