Job Description

The Global Research, Informatics & Platform Solutions team within the Information Research (IR) Division works with internal clients to provide data management and decision support tools to optimize the efficiency and efficacy of research and development at AbbVie.  As a member of the ABA Data Science team, the Senior Data Scientist II will support projects in Precision Medicine, Oncology Early Discovery, Allergan, and Omics research. This role conceives, designs, and implements innovative solutions for scientific and business challenges through the integration, visualization, and analysis of datasets. This role is responsible for identifying, developing & optimizing new methods, algorithms and technologies to gain insights and improve productivity in multiple business areas.   This is a cross-functional role, working with discovery scientists, technology stakeholders in Information Research and Business Platforms partners to optimize data capture, analysis, and decision-making. We are looking for innovators who are passionate about the next generation of intelligent automation and agentic AI. Key Responsibilities  

  • Communicate – ability to communicate with scientific individuals from Discovery teams to understand existing workflows and data flow & gather requirements  

  • Collaborative Design – understand the client’s needs, propose solutions, and develop appropriate solutions  

  • Build – Conceive, design, and implement technology solutions that integrate, visualize, and analyze complex multi-platform data, including genomics, biomarkers, & clinical data.  

  • Integrate – understand the value in capturing data properly, and integrating data sets   

  • Support – provide solutions to performance-related issues and work with downstream systems to support data driven demands  

  • Technical Proficiency - Demonstrate high proficiency in technologies for data storage, transfer, integration, visualization, and advanced analytics  

  • Adaptability – ability to work on multiple, sometimes very different, projects at one time  

  • Breadth – as a talented and motivated Senior Data Scientist II, contribute independently to a wide variety of projects related to enhancing drug discovery & development 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 7 years’ experience; Master's Degree with 6 years’ experience; PhD with 2 years’ experience
  • Working knowledge of drug discovery and development process  
  • Dedicated team player who can interface with stakeholders from a variety of internal IT disciplines (DBAs, architects, developers, etc.) and external customers (discovery scientists, therapeutic area scientists, pathologists, etc.)  
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python (and possibly other modern languages) with a focus on software engineering best practices, modular code, and robust deployment pipelines and strong familiarity with data visualization and pipelining tools such as Spotfire, or equivalent  
  • Experience with ML Ops, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and working with production environments (Docker, cloud platforms like AWS/Cloudera)  
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and work within timelines  
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration, including documenting and presenting technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders: outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills  
  • A self-motivated learner and thinker with a hands-on approach who wants to harness the power of claude 

Preferred:

  • Background in life sciences, biology, or equivalent, and demonstrated technical proficiency in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience working with data from: clinical trials, Biomarkers, and omics data 
  • Familiarity with frameworks for agent-based modeling or multi-agent systems (e.g., OpenAI GPTs, LangChain, AutoGPT, or similar agent frameworks) 
  • Ability to architect and optimize agent workflows and design agentic processes to solve business or scientific challenges
  • Familiarity with modern data science and AI techniques, especially as they pertain to autonomous or semi-autonomous systems
