Description for Sr. Director:
Purpose: Lead the strategic vision and execution of CMC Portfolio Management for the entire Development Sciences organization, ensuring robust portfolio oversight, portfolio-level risk management, and the advancement of global development assets from late discovery through commercialization. Shape and influence cross-functional R&D strategy at the enterprise level, driving innovation, operational excellence, and global competitive advantage.
Key Responsibility Areas:
- Lead and mentor multiple layers of Program Management and matrix teams, setting strategic direction for enterprise-wide CMC portfolio management and execution.
- Serve as a core leader and enterprise Portfolio Management representative on senior Leadership Teams, driving the Product Presentation & Device Strategy Team (PPDST) and Asset Development Team and influencing the broader R&D pipeline and investment decisions.
- Oversee all CMC asset governance processes, portfolio reviews, and risk mitigation strategies, ensuring alignment with enterprise priorities and regulatory requirements globally.
- Drive cross-functional integration and collaboration between CMC, Regulatory, Commercial, Finance, and Operations to accelerate asset delivery and maximize portfolio value.
- Guide the development of innovative program management practices, tools, and processes at scale, establishing best-in-class standards that are externally benchmarked and adopted across global teams.
- Shape external due diligence and business development strategies by leading teams to assess and model new business opportunities.
- Foster a high-performance culture that prioritizes talent development, diversity, and inclusion at all levels. Coach, develop, and build bench strength for future enterprise leaders.
- Direct the design and optimization of complex portfolio analytics, dashboards, and digital solutions to enable portfolio transparency, scenario planning, and decision making at all leadership levels including Board and Executive Committee.
- Benchmark AbbVie’s CMC portfolio management practices against global life sciences leaders, proactively identifying and closing capability gaps to maintain industry leadership.
- Steer major cross-organizational and transformation initiatives, championing change management efforts and leading the organization through periods of significant change and growth.
- Serve as an internal and external thought leader on CMC portfolio management; represent AbbVie at industry forums, contributing to white papers, conferences, and external benchmarking initiatives.

3. Supports development of sub-team plans and drives aligned execution for functional components
4. Ensure accurate and timely tracking and reporting of sub-team deliverables and identification, communication and management of sub-team risks
5. Actively participates in the advancement of Program Management and asset development at AbbVie
Responsibilities:
- Manage, develop, coach and mentor staff. Foster and sustain a challenging, inclusive and rewarding and inclusive work environment where talent is developed and diversity valued.
- Provide program management support for assigned Asset Teams and sub-teams. Serve as a key business partner in developing core strategies and delivering goals of asset teams.
- Coordinates sub-team activities and deliverables and supports the sub-team leader in driving cross-functional alignment within sub-team and structures sub-team meetings and discussions to drive good decision-making practices
- Responsible for partnering with Asset Team PM and helping sub-team prepare key messages and deliverables for, and navigate the governance process effectively and efficiently and appropriate use of each forum higher complexity (e.g. multi-indication assets)
- In partnership with the sub-team lead, drives development of (and participates in) creation of sub-team plans and deliverables to inform asset strategy, and to translate asset strategy into execution by the sub-team and associated functions. Maintains awareness of upcoming deliverables as a part of the asset development lifecycle to ensure sub-team preparedness in higher complexity (e.g. multi-indication assets
- Proactively identifies challenges or potential issues for execution, both within sub-team and partnering with asset PM cross-functionally, managing or escalating as appropriate
- Partners with project planners to ensure appropriate and accurate tracking and reporting of team deliverable timelines. Maintains operational awareness of the sub-team deliverables and upcoming needs by the asset team in higher complexity (e.g. multi-indication assets)
- Partners with sub-team members to proactively identify, communicate and manage sub-team risks, including escalation as appropriate for asset level risks
- Proactively seek learnings from other teams and share best practices
- Partners with colleagues in the PM organization and leads sub-teams to develop and implement change to drive process improvement
Qualifications
Qualifications for Sr. Director:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 16 years, Master’s with 13 years, or PhD with 10 years of progressive CMC functional and cross-functional leadership experience.
- Extensive prior experience leading global, matrixed teams spanning CMC and at least two other major functions (e.g., Regulatory, Commercial, Finance) in the biopharmaceutical industry.
- At least 8+ years in strategic portfolio/program management roles with demonstrated impact at the enterprise or business unit level.
- Track record of designing or leading cross-functional integration, digital transformation, or portfolio optimization initiatives at enterprise scale.
- Recognized change leader with global experience in implementing complex organizational/operating models.
- Superior strategic, analytical, and communication skills; proven ability to influence at the Executive and Board level.
- Significant experience with external partnerships, due diligence, and alliance management.
- Public leadership via publications, presentations, or participation in industry groups highly preferred.
Qualifications for Director:
- Bachelors with 16, Masters with 14, or PhD with 8 years of CMC functional experience
- Prior experience in a relevant laboratory-based CMC function (chemistry, analytical, formulation, etc.) in order to assist CMC project teams in the planning, preparation, review and approval of submission documents.
- 6+ years in a cross-functional project / program management role. Strong program management skills and knowledge of program management practices in the pharmaceutical industry and common tools utilized
- Change management experience in implementing cross-functional/organizational initiatives
- Well-developed communication skills – both written and oral
- Well-developed strategic thinking and leadership skills
- Prior people management experience, preferred
- Experience with both global and regional teams in the pharmaceutical industry preferred
