Job Description

This leadership position will report to the VP, PCS Oncology and will be an active member of the PCS Oncology leadership team. The Head of Hematology Franchise will act as a thought partner to the leadership team and cross-functional teams, where they will focus on developing key strategies and tactics to accelerate our leadership in core disease areas within hematological malignancies and expand into adjacent areas through the following:

  • In partnership with our early pipeline and BD team, create strategies that enable us to further anchor, bolster and/ or replace existing anchors within our pipeline in hematological malignancies, including novel technologies, targets, and/or modalities that may not be currently not within our pipeline. 
  • Develop strong rigor in assessing commercial viability of our pipeline and external opportunities, through strong integration of key insights and competitive landscape that are core to our assumptions, present and future. 
  • Lead pivotal / enterprise process transformation and capability build together with me, for pipeline commercialization and strategy team (PCS) that enable our growth and ambition.  E.g. Early Brand Plan, Disease Area Strategy, strategic long range planning (LRP).

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, champion and communicate vision and overall compelling strategy to all related stakeholder groups gaining commitment and support to guide portfolio prioritization, asset strategies and BD investments within hematological malignancies. 
  • Understand market, key segment value drivers, growth opportunities, target product profiles, product positioning and revenue potential for multiple Phase II+ assets/indications within the heme franchise to drive winning portfolio value proposition plans and strong P&L investment thesis.
  • Defines and drives strategic value creation across lifecycle together with R&D and commercial cross-functional partners for AbbVie’s hematology portfolio, integrating diverse internal and external perspectives.
  • Partners with the PCS VP to deliver optimal commercial strategies to maximize the value of each of the assets within the heme franchise, as well as an integrated portfolio approach within the franchise.
  • Partner with Medical Affair and Health Impact (MHI), Early & Late Clinical Development, and Commercial Cross-functional leaders to develop scientific platforms and drive data generation to satisfy Global and Area requirements for target product labels and target product claims.  Oversees development and delivery of the product Target Product Profiles (TPP) within heme franchise.
  • Oversees development of business cases for governance endorsement.
  • Identify new value generation for the franchise to unlock further opportunity.  Drive innovative and novel ways to accelerate commercialization and maximize value for patients and the company for the franchise.
  • Drive prioritization of key leverage points in the treatment process and develop behavioral objectives for each stakeholder group to define commercial strategy for the assets and for the entire franchise.
  • Effective and transparent risk, opportunity and issue management at strategic and operational levels across the franchise.
  • Initiate geo-strategy and indication prioritization within the franchise in partnership with R&D, Commercial cross-functional leaders, and Affiliates on formulating optimal reimbursement and access strategies to fully realize value of multiple assets.
  • Establish a strong external network, with engagement and consultation with clinical experts.
  • Exhibit clear and courageous leadership behavior and implement optimal program structures where appropriate to drive timely and effective decision making.
  • Partnering with Investor Relations, together with PCS VP, upon request to develop and actively manage the external messages for the analyst community.
  • Partnership & alliance management (where applicable) to drive maximum value of the partnership and to maintain compliance with the partnership agreement.
  • As a people leader, coach and develop talent, set goals, succession plan, and execute performance management agenda to align people performance to business goals, business KPIs, and to maximize business opportunities. Act as talent magnet for PCS team internally and externally. 
  • Broaden AbbVie’s Oncology network and presence by building scientific, academic, KOL, payer, and patient advocacy relationships.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, Ph.D, or MD) preferred
  • 10-15+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in progressive commercial leadership roles in marketing and/or sales.  Recency of commercial in-line operational experience is a must, and P&L ownership is preferred in US or other major markets
  • Successful launch experienced preferred
  • Managed care experience preferred
  • Oncology therapeutic experience is a must, with experience in Multiple Myeloma preferred.
  • Global experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and manage a complex set of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic marketing skills including the ability to develop commercial strategies based on a thorough and structured approach, pared with a strong scientific/clinical understanding.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen with thorough understanding of P&L drivers and the ability to develop appropriate investment and top-line sales forecasts that generate long-term value.
  • Strong executive presence and leadership skills are imperative as this leader will present to senior leaders on a regular basis and serve as a role model in the organization.
  • Demonstrated and consistent experience in successfully leading organizational change.
  • Outstanding partnering skills and the ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team and drive commercial decisions in a highly matrixed organization to accomplish business goals.
  • Proven track record of successful leadership, management and coaching of teams and individuals, and in having developed talent.
