Job Description

Bioprocess Modeling Intern (Mixed Wet/Dry) Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

As an intern on the Cell Culture and Process Development team within the Product Development Science and Technology group, you will have an incredible opportunity to make a direct impact on process development optimization strategy while developing a mixed wet/dry lab skillset.  The goal of this experience (past developing a working model of optimized batch mixing) is to become fully embedded in both sides of the computational workflow by not only transitioning mathematical concepts to fully usable web applications, but also benchmarking the output of those models by running the predictions alongside traditional design settings in 3L bioreactors.  This multi-faceted experience is then expected to translate into a well-developed ability to cross-functionally communicate.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Intern will be mentored as needed on how to analyze, design, test, and productionize a python based optimization model that ingests spectral, process, and QC data.
  • Intern will first manually, then automatically, curate and structure mixed datasets, learning the rationale and mathematical basis in the process.
  • Intern will train and test data on historical DoE batch mixing results, before using that model to predict a subset of optimized mixture combinations.
  • Intern will conduct traditional DoE in 3L Bioreactors to validate predicted optimal lot/batch mixtures and confirm the validity of this approach.
  • Intern will analyze results of the benchmark testing to assess the effect of mixing 2 to n batches, the accuracy of the predicted results, and the ability of the model to reduce experimental burden while maintaining accuracy.
