Job Description
ALTEN is seeking an analytical and detail-oriented Operational Development Engineer to support business performance and operational improvement activities across a major engineering programme.
This role is ideal for candidates with an engineering background who enjoy working with data, identifying trends and transforming complex information into meaningful insights. Whilst a Mechanical Engineering background would be advantageous, we welcome applications from candidates across all engineering disciplines.
You will play a key role in reviewing, collating and analysing operational data, supporting stakeholders through accurate reporting and helping drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Gather, validate and consolidate data from multiple operational and engineering sources.
- Develop, maintain and improve reporting tools and dashboards using Microsoft Excel.
- Analyse large datasets to identify trends, risks, opportunities and performance improvements.
- Produce regular reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and management teams.
- Support operational planning and decision-making through data-driven insights.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and investigate performance deviations.
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency and integrity across reporting processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve data collection and reporting methodologies.
- Contribute to process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
- Strong analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
- Pivot Tables
- VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP
- Complex formulas
- Data manipulation and analysis
- Dashboard creation
- Experience working with large volumes of data and producing reports.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present findings to a variety of stakeholders.
- Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience using Power BI, Power Query or similar business intelligence tools.
- Experience in engineering, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure or other technical sectors.
- Understanding of operational performance management and KPI reporting.
- Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Knowledge of project controls or programme delivery environments.
