Job Description

We are excited to welcome a couple of students for a Master Thesis Project within Automotive Mechanical Engineering in Gothenburg.

Background: An electrically propelled trailer creates opportunities for longer range, specifically for electric trucks and improved fuel economy if used in parallel with Diesel trucks leading to lower emissions over a trip. In addition, there exists a prospect of using regenerative braking while coasting down slopes, storing energy, and reusing it to aid in uphill climbs. Another prospective use case is using the electric motor for trailer braking which improves the stability of the whole combination.

To achieve this, one of the most important studies to be made is the chassis design and the packaging of all associated components on the trailer. A couple of interesting applications for this trailer would be as a construction tipper trailer and a timber trailer. Each of these trailers have their own requirements on the chassis design and construction. Both trailers require some focus on the kingpin mounting towards the front as well as loading areas. A simulation analysis of the static and dynamic loads on the chassis would be needed. There could be several iterations of design and simulations in order to optimize the weight and strength of the chassis. In addition, the physical positioning of these components play a vital role in the stability and performance of the truck-trailer combination.

Purpose/Goals:

  • Research the requirements for the chassis based on application – from previous research and design reports
  • Create CAD models of the chosen chassis concept after research. Analyse static and dynamic loads on the chassis with weight optimization approach
  • Package powertrain, Energy Storage System (batteries), electrical components, cooling package, 24V batteries, cabling

Objectives:

  • Chassis Mechanical Design
    • Design of weight optimized chassis based on legal, functional, and structural requirements
    • Simulation of static and/or dynamic load cases
  • Packaging of electrical components
    • Placement of battery modules, electric motor, and other components such as charger, inverter, fuse boxes and ECUs on the trailer chassis. Tool: PTC Creo
