Job Description

This is your opportunity to help shape the future of Water Infrastructure in New Zealand.

AECOM is looking for a Technical Director who knows water infrastructure inside out and wants to play a leading role on some of New Zealand's most important projects.

We're looking for someone technically excellent, commercially minded and well connected in the industry — someone who understands a client's biggest challenges and knows how to bring the right people and ideas together to solve them.

You'll work across the project lifecycle, from planning and advisory through design and delivery, drawing on AECOM's global Water expertise across Australia, New Zealand and internationally. You won't just deliver projects. You'll help shape our technical offering, strengthen client relationships, identify new opportunities and bring fresh thinking to the complex challenges facing the water sector.

If you're a recognised technical expert, trusted advisor and someone who thrives on big, challenging projects, this is an opportunity to make your mark.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Provide technical leadership on major and complex water infrastructure projects.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, helping solve their most challenging problems.
  • Bring together multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, practical and deliverable solutions.
  • Contribute to major bids, pursuits and business development opportunities.
  • Identify emerging trends and opportunities to strengthen AECOM's Water offering.
  • Represent AECOM with clients and across the industry, building our reputation as a leading water consultancy.
  • Mentor and develop technical specialists and emerging leaders.
  • Collaborate across New Zealand and ANZ to connect expertise and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Champion technical excellence, innovation and smarter ways of delivering projects.

Qualifications

What you’ll bring

We're looking for someone with:

  • Significant experience delivering and/or leading water infrastructure projects within a consulting environment.
  • A strong technical reputation and network within the New Zealand water sector.
  • Experience providing technical leadership on complex projects from concept through delivery.
  • Strong client and stakeholder engagement skills, with the credibility to build trusted senior relationships.
  • A track record of contributing to successful bids, pursuits and business development.
  • A genuine passion for developing people and sharing technical expertise.
  • The ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and collaborate across a large organisation.
  • An innovative mindset and appetite for new technologies and smarter ways of working.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or a related discipline, with CPEng (or equivalent) preferred.

Additional Information

Why you'll love working with us

This is more than a technical leadership role. It's an opportunity to work on some of New Zealand's most significant water infrastructures, influence the way projects are delivered, build your industry profile and help develop the people who will shape the sector in the years ahead.

You'll have the backing of AECOM's global Water business, access to some of the industry's best technical minds and the freedom to make a genuine impact — on projects, clients, people and the future of water infrastructure in New Zealand.

Alongside meaningful work, you'll enjoy a range of benefits designed to support your career and lifestyle, including:

  • Flexible work arrangements aligned with your role, team and client requirements.
  • Purchase up to 6 weeks of additional annual leave per year.
  • Volunteer and representation leave.
  • Flex public holidays — swap Easter or other holidays for ones that suit you better.

At AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously. To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
