Job Description
AECOM's Water Resources team is actively seeking an experienced Senior Water Resources Engineer for full-time employment based in the Markham, ON area for this new role.
The successful candidate will balance technical excellence with project management, client engagement, and business development activities while supporting multidisciplinary project teams. They will contribute to a wide variety of water resources projects including stormwater management planning and design, hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, watershed planning, environmental assessments, flood mitigation, stream rehabilitation and natural channel design, municipal infrastructure projects, and construction support services.
This role offers the opportunity to lead complex projects, build strong client relationships, mentor developing professionals, and contribute to the continued growth of AECOM's Water Resources practice across Ontario. The successful candidate will have opportunities to expand their technical, project management, client development, and leadership responsibilities as they grow within the organization.
Key Responsibilities & Impact
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of water resources projects from conceptual studies through detailed design, tendering, and construction support.
- Provide technical leadership for stormwater management, drainage infrastructure, hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, flood mitigation, stream rehabilitation, natural channel design, and green infrastructure projects.
- Lead and review technical analyses, engineering calculations, reports, specifications, tender documents, and cost estimates.
- Apply innovative and sustainable approaches to water resources management while balancing infrastructure needs, environmental protection, and regulatory requirements.
- Support projects serving municipal, transportation, transit, and watershed management clients across Ontario.
Client Leadership & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with municipal, transportation, conservation authority, and private-sector clients while leveraging market knowledge and professional networks to identify future opportunities.
- Support business development activities including proposal preparation, scope development, fee estimation, client engagement, and strategic pursuits.
- Represent AECOM through participation in industry conferences, professional associations, and client events.
Project Management & Delivery Excellence
- Manage multidisciplinary project teams through all phases of project delivery.
- Be responsible for project scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk management, and overall project performance.
- Coordinate effectively with engineers, planners, ecologists, fluvial geomorphologists, landscape architects, transportation professionals, and other specialists.
- Lead client meetings, technical workshops, stakeholder engagement activities, and project coordination efforts.
Collaboration & Mentorship
- Collaborate with the Group Manager, project managers, technical specialists, and junior staff to deliver high-quality projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
- Foster knowledge sharing, collaboration, and technical excellence across the Water Resources team.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) within Canada
- Minimum 8+ years of progressive experience in water resources engineering.
- Experience managing water resources projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and client coordination responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong experience delivering water resources projects for municipalities, transportation/transit agencies, MTO, conservation authorities, and other Ontario clients is an asset.
- Knowledge of Ontario water resources policies, approvals, and regulatory requirements, including MTO, MECP, municipalities, and conservation authorities is an asset.
- 15+ years of experience leading water resources components of multidisciplinary projects, including stormwater management, hydrologic/hydraulic modelling, watershed planning, floodplain management, and water resources infrastructure design.
- Proficiency with industry-standard hydrologic, hydraulic, and GIS tools, including HEC-RAS, PCSWMM/EPA SWMM, Visual OTTHYMO, InfoWorks ICM, and ArcGIS.
- Experience with 2D hydraulic modelling, fluvial geomorphology, stream restoration, erosion assessments, and/or natural channel design is an asset.
- Experience preparing cost estimates, tender documents, technical specifications, and contract administration.
- Proven ability to manage clients, stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience leading proposals, fee estimates, project planning, and business development.
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills, with experience mentoring and developing junior staff.
- Experience with climate resilience, green infrastructure, Low Impact Development (LID), ECA, Municipal Class Environmental Assessments, and environmental permitting is an asset.
