Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Senior Mineral Geologist/Economist to join our West Region mining team, providing technical leadership in the economic evaluation and strategic assessment of mining and mineral development projects across a wide range of commodities and development stages. This role is intended for a senior-level professional with deep expertise in mining geology and project economics who can lead the integration of geological models, resource and reserve data, and mine planning inputs into robust, decision-focused economic analyses. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating complex geological and technical information into clear, defensible insights that support investment decisions, project development strategies, and long-term portfolio value.
In this role, you will serve as a technical leader on multidisciplinary project teams, guiding geological and economic workstreams from early-stage project screening through scoping, prefeasibility, and feasibility-level studies, as well as advisory and due diligence engagements. You will provide senior geological judgment related to resource confidence, geological risk, grade continuity, and deposit characteristics, and assess their implications for mine design, production scheduling, and project economics. Working closely with geologists, mining engineers, processing specialists, and environmental professionals, you will help shape project strategies, mentor junior staff, and support clients with technically sound, commercially grounded recommendations that optimize project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Economic and Technical Analysis
- Lead the development, review, and refinement of integrated financial and economic models for mining projects, including cash flow forecasts, NPV, IRR, and payback analyses.
- Evaluate project economics using geological models, resource and reserve estimates, production schedules, capital and operating cost inputs, and commodity price assumptions.
- Conduct sensitivity, scenario, and risk analyses to assess project robustness, key value drivers, and downside risks.
- Support comparative economic evaluations of alternative mine plans, development concepts, processing routes, and operating strategies.
- Apply consistent assumptions, methodologies, and quality standards to ensure transparent, defensible, and auditable economic results.
Geological Evaluation and Resource Support
- Interpret and apply geological models, resource classifications, and reserve estimates to support economic evaluations and project valuation.
- Review and assess geological data including drill hole databases, block models, grade distributions, and geostatistical outputs to inform economic assumptions.
- Support the evaluation of geological risk and uncertainty and its impact on project economics, mine planning, and development strategies.
- Collaborate with project geologists and mining engineers to align geological interpretations with mine design, production schedules, and life-of-mine plans.
- Contribute geological insight to project screening, option analysis, and development trade-off studies.
- Support geological inputs for technical studies including scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, and life-of-mine assessments.
Project Leadership and Integration
- Integrate geological, mining, processing, and environmental inputs into economic assessments across scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, and life-of-mine studies.
- Provide senior technical support to advisory engagements, including project screening, option analysis, portfolio evaluations, and strategic planning studies.
- Support due diligence assignments and independent technical reviews by leading or contributing to economic workstreams.
- Collaborate with project managers to support schedule, quality, and budget objectives while meeting client expectations.
- Mentor junior economists, geologists, and technical staff by providing guidance on modeling approaches, assumptions, and best practices.
- Reporting and Client Communication
- Prepare high-quality client-facing reports, presentations, and technical memoranda summarizing economic analyses and geological-economic findings.
- Present economic and geological insights to internal leadership and external clients with confidence and clarity.
- Lead or contribute to the preparation of economic and geology-related sections of technical reports and advisory deliverables.
- Ensure clear documentation of assumptions, methodologies, and results to support transparency and peer review.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary technical leads to ensure consistent messaging and alignment across project deliverables.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Economics, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline and 10+ years of relevant experience in mineral economics, project evaluation, or mining project analysis or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 2 years of leadership
Preferred Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience supporting economic evaluation, financial modeling, and strategic assessment of mining or natural resource projects.
- Advanced degree in Geology, Mineral Economics, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in mining, natural resources, or a professional services or consulting environment.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and financial modeling skills with demonstrated ability to integrate geological and technical inputs.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex economic and geological concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
