Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking an experienced Fiber Optic Inspector to join our growing team in support of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in the Arlington, VA area.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Inspect, verify, and document fiber optic installations (aerial, underground, and intra-facility)
  • Perform QA/QC inspections, reviewing workmanship, and validating test results
  • Conduct fiber optic installation and inspection
  • Execute fusion and mechanical splicing, and connector terminations (SC/APC, LC/UPC, MPO, etc.)
  • Under minimal direction, rely on extensive experience and independent judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Set own project deadlines and manage time effectively
  • Provide on-the-job training to new employees and mentor junior team members
  • Monitor conformance to quality, performance, specifications, and/or code requirements by performing inspection duties
  • Perform daily field inspections and maintain detailed inspection records
  • Participate in punch lists, testing, and commissioning activities
  • Track quality assurance progress and report findings to project managers
  • Provide input to documentation for area and equipment turnover
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project milestones are met
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex fiber optic issues in the field
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for fiber optic inspections
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and regulations during field operations
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on inspection findings and recommend corrective actions
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies in fiber optics

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • HS Diploma/GED plus 8 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Due to the projects associated with the position a US Citizenship is required
  • Proficient in OLTS Testing, OTDR testing, power meter/light source testing, and use of visual fault locators
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber design drawings, schematics, splice plans, and cable management records
  • Familiar with fiber types (single-mode, multi-mode, loose tube, ribbon, and micro duct) and installation standards (TIA/EIA, ANSI, NEC, NFPA 130)
  • Able to work night shifts occasionally, as required, with the possibility of weekend work

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent certification
  • Knowledge of WMATA fiber plant standards or similar large-scale municipal/transit network environments 
  • Experience with air-blown fiber (ABF) system installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • BICSI Technician (TECH) certification 
  • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification 
  • OSHA 10/30 certification and confined space or lift training 
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to workmanship standards
  • Strong communication, documentation, and reporting abilities
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively across multiple shifts and field environments
  • Proactive in identifying and resolving discrepancies during installation, testing, or inspection
  • Physically able to work in vaults, manholes, tunnels, or aerial environments as required
