Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Lead Tailings Geotechnical Engineer to serve as the Tailings Market Sector Lead for Canada. In this role, you will plan, promote, and implement the Canada Region practice vision for Tailings and Mine Waste. Reporting to the Water Business Line, the successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership, growth, and technical excellence of AECOM’s Tailings and Mine Waste Practice in Canada.
You will support existing clients, develop new client relationships, and collaborate closely with Global and Regional Practice Leaders to advance strategic initiatives. This role also includes coordinating technical services and staff within the Mining practice to foster collaboration across the region.
This position may be based in any of AECOM’s Canadian offices, with a preference for Vancouver or Montréal.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and execute strategic initiatives to grow AECOM’s Tailings and Mine Waste Practice in Canada
- Recruit, mentor, and develop top technical talent within the practice
- Foster technical excellence and professional growth through coaching and leadership
- Actively participate in AECOM’s Technical Practice Group
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients and successfully win new work
- Plan, direct, and oversee large, complex projects or multiple moderately sized projects with significant risk, complexity, and financial impact
- Resolve complex technical and project-related issues
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to project teams
- Perform independent technical reviews of engineering reports and designs
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and maintain full responsibility for project delivery
- Act as Engineer of Record (EOR) on design and design-build projects
- Lead project teams of 10 or more members, often across multiple business lines, remote locations, and including subcontractors
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering projects, addressing unique or complex challenges
- Develop, review, and evaluate project plans on a regular basis
- Provide expert advice to clients on engineering matters, including compliance with applicable regulations and standards
- Partner with clients to develop long-term, sustainable solutions
- Provide project leadership in the design, analysis, and construction of dam and tailings infrastructure projects
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline
- 12+ years of progressive experience in the Tailings and Mine Waste sector
- Previous experience serving as Engineer of Record for large tailings facilities
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline
- 20+ years of progressive experience in tailings management, preferably within Canada
- Highly collaborative, with the ability to build strong working relationships across AECOM and with global project teams
- Demonstrated success in pursuing and winning work in Canada, with a strong reputation in the Canadian mining market
- Proven experience leading and building multidisciplinary teams
- Willingness and capability to take on Project Management responsibilities, including schedule and budget control, client engagement, and proposal development
- Ability to attract and retain key talent within the Canadian mining market
- Experience in client service, marketing, and business development
- Bilingualism in French and English
