Job Description

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Air Quality Specialist to provide advanced technical expertise in air quality studies and compliance efforts. The successful candidate will focus on air dispersion modeling, emissions management, and regulatory compliance while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex air quality challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Air Emission Inventory and Dispersion Modelling
    • Lead preparation of high-quality air quality assessment reports to support air permitting and environmental assessments.
    • Manage and perform (if necessary) air dispersion modelling using AERMOD, CALPUFF, and CAL3HQCR.
    • Estimate air emissions for greenhouse gases, criteria air contaminants, and other pollutants using site-specific data, emission factors, and US EPA MOVES modeling.
    • Interpret modeling results and compare to local, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Ambient Air Monitoring Support
    • Manage and oversee installation, maintenance, and decommissioning of air monitoring equipment.
    • Coordinate with suppliers and laboratories for equipment performance and calibration.
    • Manage data collection, troubleshoot issues, and ensure data accuracy.
    • Lead preparation of air quality management and monitoring plans.
  • Compliance (Permitting, NPRI, GHG, AEIR, etc.)
    • Have a working knowledge and demonstrate an understanding of relevant regulatory programs, guidelines, and best practices related to ambient air quality.
    • Coordinate the project team and lead the air quality assessments for permits and wider environmental assessment projects.
    • Liaise with provincial and federal regulators on behalf of clients with report submissions and permit applications.
  • Research and Technical Expertise
    • Conduct investigations into industrial processes and air emissions, especially in oil and gas, transportation, and chemical sectors.
    • Provide recommendations on air pollution control strategies and regulatory compliance.
    • Prepare high-quality technical documents and reports.
  • Business Development
    • Support business development and proposal preparation with technical expertise and technical contacts in industry, especially in the energy and oil & gas sectors.
  • Collaboration and Process Optimization
    • Collaborate with internal teams across Canada and external clients to meet project goals.
    • Mentor junior staff and support business development initiatives.
    • Automate data analysis workflows using tools such as Python or R.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6 years of relevant and demonstrated experience in air quality analysis, dispersion modeling, project management, technical writing, proposal preparation, and environmental compliance OR demonstrated equivalency of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8 or more years of experience in air quality analysis, including advanced dispersion modeling.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in mentoring junior team members.
  • Experience in preparation of regulatory approvals, reports and permits.
  • Familiarity with ambient air monitoring systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in Python or R for workflow automation.
