AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Senior Structural Engineer - Bridges for employment in our Greater Pennsylvania Area (GPA) offices, which include Philadelphia, PA, Conshohocken, PA, Mechanicsburg, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Morgantown, WV.

In this role, the ideal candidate will act as a Structures Design Lead on a variety of exciting, often highly visible pursuits and projects.  The individual will have overall responsibility for all structural aspects of these projects and inter-discipline coordination of all technical issues with other discipline leads from initial design through technical support during the construction phase.  This position is an opportunity to work within a well-established and very successful group that offers a diverse range of projects, technical challenges and career development opportunities.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all structural engineering technical aspects of pursuits and projects with other disciplines and in support of the Project/Design Manager.
  • Ensure the structural design is completed in accordance with the contract guidelines and design documents.
  • Establish structural scope, work plan and work schedule in support of the Project Manager.
  • Lead all elements of conceptual, preliminary and detailed final design of new bridges and rehabilitation or reconstruction of existing bridges.
  • Provide technical guidance and perform quality control reviews of design calculations, drawings and other contract documents.
  • Prepare and/or guide the development of technical specifications and construction cost estimates.
  • Manage groups of engineers, designers and/or specialists towards development of structural design documents and contract deliverables with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Assure conformance with contractual obligations by ensuring that design documents are reviewed and approved prior to release to the client.
  • Train, mentor and develop staff and support career growth opportunities for staff.
  • Support marketing coordination and proposal preparation. Participate in proposal interviews.
  • Ensure that QA/QC procedures are being implemented and ensure the technical quality of deliverables. Lead responses to client’s comments on structural design elements of the deliverables.
  • Anticipate potential budget and schedule impacts and initiate plans for alternative actions.
  • Incorporate innovation in design and delivery.

Examples of some of the high-profile recently designed projects that our Greater Pennsylvania Area structures group include, but may not be limited to, the following:

Schuylkill Banks Trail Extension (Christian Street to Grays Ferry Crescent), Philadelphia, PA

  • This project involved the planning and design of an 18-span, 1,820-foot long pedestrian bridge over and along the east bank of the Schuylkill River.  The bridge includes 15 prestressed concrete PA Bulb-Tee Beam approach spans and a three-span, cable-stayed main span. The project is currently in construction with an anticipated completion date of May 2025. This project was a successor project to our award-winning Schuylkill Banks Trail Boardwalk (Schuylkill Boardwalk) Project, which was constructed in 2013, a project that has brought transformational change to the Schuylkill Banks Trail, the City of Philadelphia, and the residents of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas.

SR 7404 07M Over Lehigh River & NSRR, Lehigh & Northampton County, PennDOT District 5-0

  • This project involved the replacement of the 1,120-ft bridge carrying SR 7404 over the Lehigh River and NSRR between Coplay, PA and Northampton, PA. The new bridge replaced an existing multi-span concrete open spandrel arch, multi-span steel girder floorbeam unit, and a single span Warren truss. The new structure utilized fully continuous spliced, post-tensioned prestressed concrete girders for the main span over the Lehigh River, representing the first time that spliced, post-tensioned prestressed concrete girders were used in Pennsylvania.  Conventional prestressed concrete girders were used for approach spans. The project also involved the reuse of existing substructure units, ornamental lighting and the use of explosives for demolition of the existing concrete arches.

Ongoing projects:

Our structures group is currently working on multiple major bridge and bridge corridor replacement projects across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including:

SR 0080 17M Total Reconstruction, Monroe County, PennDOT District 5-0

  • This project involves the total reconstruction of approximately 4 miles of Interstate 80 (I-80) in Stroudsburg, PA. The project includes the reconfiguration of four interchanges and widening of the highway to accommodate six lanes of traffic. The project involves the replacement of twenty-two bridges and culverts, the addition of fifty retaining walls, thirty sign structures and six sound barriers. Several structures involve the use of curved steel I-girders, integral pier caps and steel straddle bents. The project is currently in design and is anticipated to be let in three contracts between 2025 and 2029.

SR 0081 D46 Total Reconstruction, Lackawanna County, PennDOT District 4-0

  • This project involves the total reconstruction of approximately 4 miles of Interstate 81 (I-81) in Scranton, PA. The project includes the reconfiguration of two interchanges and widening of the highway to accommodate six lanes of traffic. The project involves the replacement of twenty-four bridges, the addition of twenty retaining walls, multiple sign structures and several sound barriers. The project is currently in design and is anticipated to be let in a single contract in 2027.
