Job Description

Opportunity exists for a Microbiologist and Food Safety Specialist - Quality in International Breweries Plc Ilesha, reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager. The Microbiologist and Food Safety Specialist will manage brewery Food Safety standards and specifications and to define, develop and implement optimal brewery wide microbiological standards and work practices to ensure compliance to microbiological processes, food safety standards and product specifications

Duties and responsibilities 

Amongst other duties, the job holder will be responsible for the following: 

  • Ensure quality control and food safety governance for the brewery 
  • Standards are in place and well understood  
  • Training is done against the specified methods
  • Verification of the execution of the procedures to ensure that they comply with the standards
  • Ensure that equipment is calibrated and is functioning as per original standard  
  • Highlight of any deviations to the Brewing manager, Packaging manager and Plant manager for action and stopping of the process when necessary 
  • Manage Quality Control Environment 
  • Conform to value chain requirements  
  • Manage QC administration  
  • Optimise the availability of measuring equipment  
  • Maintain and control consumable stock levels  
  • Optimise quality control management system 

Optimize team performance

  • Lead quality strategy as per VPO 
  • Manage interactions with external suppliers (cleaning contractors) and internal stakeholders (Brewing, Packaging, Engineering, etc.) in relation to implementing and optimizing hygiene standards and work practices to prevent microbiological contamination within the brewery
  • Apply problem solving and decision-making techniques and practices and facilitate team problem solving. E.g. Lead the Hygiene Steering Committee comprising of team leaders and department heads to assess and analyze hygiene practices and identify alternatives for resolution
  • Apply a holistic understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) practices critical to Brewing and Packaging processes to prevent microbiological infections
  • Revise and develop best operating practice standards and procedures to improve microbiological compliance within brewery
  • Audit microbiological laboratory to ensure compliance to hub and global microbiological methodology and frequencies
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise to optimize microbiological work practices through problem solving

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Microbiology/ Biological Sciences or equivalent 

  • 2-3 Years in Laboratory, Brewing or Packaging Operations

  • Proven knowledge and experience in integrating and facilitating a multidisciplinary group of skills, specialists and functions  

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Problem Solving ability Ability to work in teams
