Job Description

About GetPaid

The GetPaid team owns the ways Wise Business customers ask for money and get paid without either side needing to write code. Our products include Payment Links, Invoicing, and QuickPay with QR codes.

Invoicing is our biggest opportunity today. Too many businesses create an invoice but do not complete the journey through to payment. Others receive the money but have to match it back to the invoice themselves. We want businesses to know what they have been paid, what is still outstanding, and what they need to do next.

Our mission is to close the gap between "invoice created" and "invoice paid". That means improving invoice creation and publishing, making it easier for customers to pay, and helping businesses match and reconcile the money they receive.

About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Lead to lead a multidisciplinary team of backend, web, and mobile engineers.

You will set the team's technical direction and help it deliver work it is proud of. You will also manage the engineers in the team, supporting their growth, wellbeing, and performance. Together with the Product Manager, designer, and analyst, you will decide which customer problems to solve and break them into work the team can ship.

You do not need to be the deepest technical expert in every discipline. The team will, however, look to you for direction, sound technical judgement, and help when decisions or dependencies are blocking progress.

What you will own

- Lead and develop the engineers in the team through regular feedback, coaching, performance management, and career conversations, and help us hire and onboard the right people

- Work with the Product Manager to decide what matters most and turn it into work the team can ship and learn from

- Own the team's technical roadmap, including reliability, security, observability, and technical debt

- Lead improvements across invoice publishing, payment matching, reconciliation, and the first-time customer experience

- Guide decisions that involve frontend, backend, mobile, data, or services owned by other teams

- Break large or uncertain problems into smaller steps, with clear ownership and a way to tell whether each step helped

- Lead regulatory and market-driven work where the requirements are complex and the deadline may not be flexible

What we are looking for

You do not need to match every point below. If the role sounds exciting and you think you could do it well, we would like to hear from you.

- Experience leading an engineering team and supporting engineers' growth, wellbeing, and performance

- Good product judgement and a focus on solving customer problems rather than simply delivering feature requests

- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience guiding the design and delivery of production systems

- An AI-first approach to software development: you use AI across discovery, design, coding, testing, and operations, while keeping engineers accountable for quality, security, and the decisions they make

- Comfort leading across backend, web, and mobile disciplines, even if your own background is stronger in one area

- The ability to explain trade-offs and break down complex work when the requirements are unclear or important constraints compete

- A track record of collaborating across teams and influencing people outside your reporting line

- Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences

- High standards for reliable, secure, observable, and well-tested software

- Good judgement about when to make a decision, when to ask for help, and when to bring in deeper expertise

Experience with Java, Spring Boot, relational databases, payments, invoicing, or reconciliation would be useful, but we do not expect you to arrive with expertise in every part of our stack or domain.
