Whakarongorau Aotearoa is on a journey to build an intelligent, data-driven health ecosystem that enables proactive care, operational excellence, and better outcomes for tāngata whai ora.
We are seeking an experienced Senior AI & Data Engineer on a contract basis (up to 10 hours a week) to help design, build and scale the data and AI capabilities that will underpin our future digital services. This is an opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact initiatives that combine modern data engineering, Generative AI and intelligent automation in a complex and purpose-driven environment.

Ngā haepapa matua | Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver modern data platforms, pipelines and trusted data products using Microsoft Fabric, Azure and cloud technologies.
- Build and deploy Generative AI, RAG architectures, AI assistants and intelligent automation solutions from concept through to production.
- Develop secure, scalable integrations between data platforms, AI services and enterprise systems.
- Establish data and AI governance, monitoring, quality, security and responsible AI practices.
- Partner with stakeholders across the organisation to identify opportunities where data, automation and AI can drive measurable value.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor others and contribute to the growth of Whakarongorau Data, Analytics and AI capabilities.

You are a senior engineer with deep expertise across data platforms, cloud technologies and AI solutions. You're equally comfortable building scalable data foundations as you are developing innovative AI capabilities that solve real business problems.
You combine strong technical capability with commercial thinking, enjoy navigating complexity, and have a track record of delivering secure, production-ready solutions that create measurable value. Above all, you're curious, collaborative and passionate about using data and technology to improve outcomes for people across Aotearoa.
Ōu wheako ōu mātauranga hoki | Qualifications and Experience
- Proven experience in Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, AI Engineering or a similar discipline.
- Demonstrated success delivering solutions within complex enterprise environments.
- Strong experience building cloud-based data platforms and modern data architectures.
- Advanced SQL and Python development skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Platform, Databricks or comparable technologies.
- Expertise delivering data pipelines, data warehouses, lakehouses and semantic models.
- Experience implementing data governance, metadata management and data quality frameworks.
- Hands-on experience designing and deploying Generative AI solutions in production environments.
- Strong understanding of AI governance, observability, security and responsible AI practices.
Experience within healthcare, government, or public sector will be an advantage.
