​​​​​​Who will you be working with?

Wabtec’s Transit products and services serve all types of rail transit, from high-speed trains to regional networks and metro systems. Our integrated series of components, manufactured using advanced technologies, are designed to meet our customers’ needs for safety, energy efficiency and reliability. Where is the position located? The position can be based at our office in Rydalmere, Sydney or Brisbane with travel to other Wabtec & client sites. 

What will your typical day look like?

The General Manager (GM) serves as the senior executive leader responsible for the strategic leadership, direction, operational excellence, governance, and overall performance of Wabtec Transit Services (TSG) and Original Equipment (OE) business within Australia and New Zealand.

Reporting to Regional VP Transit Services, the GM role is responsible for leading transit organisation in ANZ and liaising on transit initiatives with central team (mainly based in Europe). This includes ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, driving performance of the business, managing internal and external stakeholders, ensuring strategic goals are met, overseeing Transit manufacturing operations, leading different teams, and managing employees to ensure business is run smoothly and growth is achieved.


This role ensures alignment with global regional and Groups’ strategies, achieving commercial success as per strategic plan and challenges to drive sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and stakeholder engagement.

Strategic Leadership and Governance

  • Develop, implement, and lead the strategic direction of the Transit business in Australia and New Zealand, ensuring alignment with organisational and regional goals.

  • Serve as a key member of the ANZ executive team, contributing to overall business strategy and decision making.

  • Provide clear strategic vision and set measurable goals to drive growth and long-term sustainability.

  • Build Wabtec Transit brand across key external stakeholders.

  • Establish and comply with robust governance frameworks to guide decision making and ensure business integrity.

  • Manage litigation risks by proactively identifying legal vulnerabilities and implementing mitigation strategies.

Sales & Marketing Activities

  • Drive sales and business development strategies to expand market share and revenue streams for Services and Product Lines across the Transit group.

  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, including government bodies and partners to support required growth .

  • Monitor market trends to identify opportunities to service expansion or new opportunities.

  • Partake and support the Original Equipment (OE) activities through-out Australia and New Zealand; increase the OE Market share through new projects and processes to introduce OE products.

  • Build on OE success and Installed base to bring added value to the Customer’s with local support capabilities and services.

  • Develop required commercial strategies to support the growth of TSG and OE activities across the region.

  • Define commercial priorities to achieve YoY targeted organic growth.

  • Develop and implement the regional marketing plan for the Transit business.

  • Structure and drive complete organization to support commercial endeavours - full Transit product portfolio.

  • Represent Wabtec Transit across industry events and engagements, raise awareness of our brand of products and innovations, servicing the Rolling Stock Sector.

  • Connect with railway & rail institutional stakeholders across Australia and New Zealand to represent Wabtec's Transit portfolio.

Financials and Compliance

  • Responsibility for the Budget formation, Order Intake, Sales, Contribution Margin (CM) and Cash targets, the other KPI’s of the Transit Business function.

  • Full P&L Responsibility for the Transit business in ANZ.

  • Develop and manage the Transit business budget, ensuring financial sustainability and growth.

  • Proactive identification of cost optimisation opportunities while maintaining service quality.

  • Deliver monthly and quarterly financial reports including P&L, revenue, margins, and cost performance

  • Provide variance analysis against budgets and forecasts with actionable insights

  • Develop and maintain financial forecasts and business outlook

  • Track and report on profitability drivers

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and company policies.

  • Identify and mitigate risks related to operations, safety, and business continuity.

  • Review and improve organisational efficiency by developing compliant procedures.

Operational Excellence

  • Provide strategic leadership to Operations Site Leaders to ensure operational efficiency and on time delivery as per business commitment

  • Champion strict workplace safety protocols and controls. Ensure Operations Site leadership teams implement all safety related control and monitor effectiveness

  • Review and strive to improve all Operational KPIs related to production P&L budgets, Lean manufacturing process improvements and direct quality assurance compliance standards.

  • Hold the Operations Site leaders accountable for production output with sales forecasts through SIOP including production capacity planning

  • Report on service performance KPIs incl. quality, productivity, utilization, and capacity and inventory metrics

  • Highlight operational risks, service gaps, and improvement actions

  • Ensure transparent reporting on service delivery effectiveness and efficiency

Develop, Lead and Engage

  • Leadership through Wabtec's core values, People First, Expand the Possible, Embrace Diversity, and One Wabtec

  • Direct reporting functional lines: Sales & Marketing, Customer Care Team, Engineering, Project Management, Operations, EHS & Quality and other functions as it might be required

  • Partner with Indirect reporting functional lines; Human Resources, Finance, Tax, Legal, Property, Corporate, for the improvement of commercial services across the region

  • Provide visibility into talent development and succession planning

  • Establish a highly motivated work environment.

Reporting & Governance

  • The role provides structured, insight-driven reporting to the VP to support strategic decision-making, operational oversight, & business growth.

  • Strong alignment with VP priorities and strategic direction and strong alignment with Group’s initiatives

  • Deliver forward-looking insights and recommendations to support VP-level decisions

  • Align reporting with organizational and regional priorities and long-term objectives

  • Present regular updates on customer satisfaction and service quality trends including maintaining reporting on key accounts, and client performance

  • Escalate critical business issues, financial risks, and service failures promptly

  • Enable data-driven discussions with the VP through structured reporting

  • Ensure alignment of workforce strategy with business demand

  • Report on sales pipeline, deal conversion, and revenue forecasts

  • Provide updates on business development activities and key opportunities

 

Qualifications

What do we want to know about you?

  • Min Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with at least 10 years of experience in leadership positions, with at least 5 years in a senior management role. Confirmed experience in Rail, Infrastructure or similar industry. Experience in Manufacturing and Services sector will be highly regarded.

  • CRM experience is advantageous

  • Proven track record of driving business growth with strong decision making and problem-solving skills

  • Risk management and compliance awareness

  • Leading diverse teams and managing cross functional operations with strong team leadership and mentoring ability

  • Strategic thinking with the ability to translate into actionable plans.

  • Ability to focus on critical details ensuring accuracy and precision in high level decisions and processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results.

  • Ability to translate data into insights and actions

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills incl. negotiation and influencing skills.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills and stakeholder management (internal and external)

  • Experience with Profit & Loss accountability , driving forecasts and financial requirements.

  • Experience in commercial operations, budgeting and financial management, strategic planning and business development

  • Existing expertise in Process optimization and efficiency improvement and performance monitoring and reporting

  • Personal attributes: Strong leadership presence and integrity, adaptability and resilience, results-driven mindset, strategic thinking with attention to detail

  • Flexibility with work hours and willingness to travel if and when required.
