Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, building and maintaining scalable data pipelines and data platform architecture. The role involves working with analysts, technical teams and stakeholders to ensure data is accessible, reliable and optimised for analytics and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and document technical requirements and scope to support delivery planning and solution design.
  • Develop and maintain Azure Synapse data pipelines for ingesting, processing and storing structured and unstructured data.
  • Troubleshoot and deploy pipelines through Azure DevOps and Terraform.
  • Work with infrastructure teams to resolve deployment and environment-related issues.
  • Design and implement logical and physical data models that support analytics and reporting requirements.
  • Apply database development standards including indexing, key management and performance optimisation.
  • Define schema design, partitioning and performance tuning approaches.
  • Perform platform maintenance activities to support performance, reliability and security.
  • Implement data quality controls, monitoring and version management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with governance, security and privacy requirements including GDPR.
  • Deliver knowledge-sharing sessions and support users in understanding platform capabilities.
  • Keep current with Microsoft data technologies including Microsoft Fabric and migration approaches.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Degree qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Data Engineer or similar role.
  • Advanced SQL experience covering querying, transformation and optimisation.
  • Experience working with relational databases including Azure SQL.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience designing and supporting Azure Synapse Analytics solutions.
  • Understanding of distributed data processing technologies including Spark and PySpark.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory or comparable orchestration tools.
  • Experience processing and transforming data from sources including CSV, JSON and structured datasets.
  • Experience developing automation scripts using Python, PowerShell or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience applying DevOps practices and deployment tools within data platforms.
  • Understanding of data modelling principles and database administration.
  • Understanding of Microsoft data and reporting technologies, including Power Platform.
  • Knowledge of Logic Apps.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
  • Experience working independently and within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Criteria

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203).
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900).
  • Microsoft Fabric certification.
  • Public sector experience.
  • Experience supporting multi-agency or cross-department programmes.
  • Knowledge of cloud data platforms beyond Azure.
