Job Description
Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring that Vention’s industrial automation solutions meet the highest international standards for safety, electrical compliance, and environmental impact. This role involves leading the certification lifecycle—from design, initial risk assessment to final project compliance—ensuring that all
systems are safe for human-machine collaboration and compliant with global market requirements.
You will be the main driver of the machine safety culture. Developing standards and tools you will collaborate closely with the design team, the clients and the commissioning team. Vention develops automation products in order for the designers and commissioning teams to deliver automation projects. These products undergo a certification process led by the Product certification engineer. A strong client-supplier relationship between your function and the certification engineer will lead Vention to success.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation of functional safety standards including ISO 13849-1/-2 (Safety of machinery) and IEC 62061. Conduct rigorous risk assessments to identify hazards in automated workflows and robotics;
- Develop recommendations to improve machine safety based on current standards (CSA, ISO, OSHA, etc.); Robotics & Control Systems: Apply ISO 10218-1/-2 and ANSI/A3 R15.06 (Robots and robotic devices) to ensure safety in collaborative and industrial robot applications;
- Design project safety protocols in collaboration with the project teams;
- Design and build project specific safety modules if required by the project;
- Program safety controllers such as REER and Keyence;
- Perform verification and validation testing to confirm Performance Levels and Safety Integrity Levels;
- Write detailed technical reports on safety risk assessments (SRA) results and solutions to be implemented;
- Participate in design reviews to ensure conformity to the applicable standards;
- Participate in testing and commissioning of systems;
- Maintain and improve machine safety standards;
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary project team;
- Stay up to date on regulatory and technological developments related to machine safety;
- Lead discussions and brainstorming sessions with clients to determine the risk reduction measures to be implemented;
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
- Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) membership required
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in product certification or safety engineering within the industrial automation, robotics, or hardware manufacturing sectors.
- Standards Mastery: Deep expertise in ISO 12100, ISO 13849, IEC 60204-1, IEC 61010-1, ANSI/A3 R15.06, ISO 14120 and ISO 10218.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of the EU Machinery Directive.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in safety evaluation tools (e.g., SISTEMA), programming of safety controllers and requirement management software.
- Certification: Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) is a strong asset.
- Rigorous Analysis: A meticulous approach to identifying safety gaps and ensuring robust mitigation strategies.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with hardware, software, and manufacturing teams to drive compliance without sacrificing innovation.
- Technical Advocacy: Strong communication skills to justify safety architectures to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Global Perspective: Understanding of international regulatory landscapes to facilitate global market expansion.
