R&D Engineer within control, automation & OT integration
- Full-time
- Workplace type (LinkedIn): Hybrid

Company Description
Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest producers and retailers of electricity and heat. Our main markets are Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK. The Vattenfall Group has approximately 21 000 employees. We have been electrifying industries, powering homes and transforming life through innovation for more than 100 years.
Job Description
Do you want to move Vattenfall forward in the emerging energy landscape? We're looking for R&D Engineers with focus on control, automation, and OT integration to our Digital Energy Solutions section.
About the team
At Digital Energy Solutions, we develop solutions that make our energy systems more efficient, flexible and secure. From decentralized solutions such as batteries, e-mobility and demand response, to automation, secure IT/OT integration and communications; our team turns innovation into real-world impact, accelerating the transition to fossil freedom.
The team works broadly at system level while remaining close to implementation. We typically take ideas from technical and business needs to system concepts, proof of concepts, laboratory demonstrations and preparation for field-ready solutions in Vattenfall’s generation, distribution and customer-facing businesses.
Your role
You will work at the intersection of electrical engineering, control and automation, power-system communications, energy management, and secure OT integration.
Depending on your background, you will work more in depth within one or more areas as the role is adaptable. Technical areas we primarily work with are:
Operational technology & grid automation: automation systems for digital substations, control, protection and automation functions, virtualized & edge solutions, as well as automated engineering workflows.
IT/OT integration & communications: everything from standardized data modelling (IEC 61850, IEC CIM, etc.) to industrial networks and communication protocols (IEC 60870-5-101/104, Modbus (RTU/TCP), IEC 61850, OPC UA, MQTT, etc.), time synchronization, redundant communication and operational data integration. Including design of secure OT- & enterprise architecture.
Control, optimization & flexibility: Model-based, predictive & optimization-based control at both asset and supervisory levels, including demand response, DER and microgrid control. Market-based optimization across ancillary services, intraday and day-ahead markets, as well as assessment and adaptations to changes of TSO/DSO regulations, grid codes and compliance requirements.
Simulation, software & validation: working with technologies like MATLAB/Simulink and Python to build digital twins, software development & version control tools, data- analysis & visualization and real-time simulation (HIL & PHIL).
Qualifications
No projects are exactly the same and the way forward is rarely predefined; therefore, you will thrive with us if you're motivated by turning abstract ideas into concrete and pragmatic solutions through experimentation and learning as you go, even within completely unfamiliar areas. You move things forward independently and know when to reach out to people and how to communicate needs and proposals to both technical specialists and business stakeholders.
We are interested in both early career and experienced engineers. You don't need to be a match on every technology listed, we're more interested in the engineering foundation you bring and ability to understand how different technical areas connect at system level.
We believe you have:
A university degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, control and automation, or similar field which has given you a solid foundation in concepts related to electrical and energy systems.
Fluency in English
Knowledge or practical experience in at least two of the technical areas below. Some areas are particularly valuable in combination:
- Automation, control or protection systems for electrical or industrial applications.
- IT/OT integration, industrial communication or utility communication systems.
- Digital substations: secondary side components and solutions.
- Modelling, simulation, optimization or software development for energy applications.
- Renewable generation, batteries, EV charging, distributed energy resources or microgrids.
- Real-time simulation (HIL/PHIL), laboratory testing, commissioning or technical troubleshooting.
It's an advantage if you have worked within any of the technological areas that are listed in the role description above.
