Job Description

A day in the life:

AM: The day begins with a quick meeting with the contractor who is in the factory to assemble a machine you designed. After clarifying the assembly steps with the team, you finalize a design you have been working on so that you are organized for your design review presentation at 9:30AM. It’s the first design review for this project, and you know that many things will change and that is reflected in your design decisions. You ensured to skip the fine details so that you can quickly present a preliminary 3D model to obtain further directions for design. Important points come up during the meeting that require changes and additions, all of which are noted down by yourself to further advance the project.

Later that morning : You go back in the factory to follow up with the assembly that started this morning. There’s a part that doesn’t fit, so you verify the drawings, measure the part, and realize the machine shop made a mistake. You contact the machine shop and ask them if they can redo the part today. The answer is “yes”, and so you pack up the part and drive to the machine shop to save time. Upon your return, you realize that your orders are late for another project that you are simultaneously working on. You do not hesitate to pick up the phone and contact the supplier.

PM: You end the day by updating the Engineering supervisor of all updates and changes and then proceeding to finalizing this morning’s design project while staying up to date with the assembly happening in the factory.

Under the supervision of the Mechanical Engineer, the Mechanical Designer will be required to support the engineering team and maintenance. He will, amongst other things, participate in updating the drawings of replacement parts, design and/or modify production equipment, make fabrication and assembly drawings, and carry out purchases and installation.   • Develop & create 3D CAD models of mechanical systems and parts for new equipment;
  • Perform tolerance testing of mechanical parts and assemblies;
  • Analyze & help solve technical problems;
  • Take measurements on existing parts;
  • Improve existing parts;
  • Make fabrication and assembly drawings;
  • Make revisions and corrections on existing drawings;
  • Document and keep project folders up to date with all revisions and notes
  • Prepare bills of materials to send for quotation;
  • Optimize current equipment to increase production efficiencies;
  • Prepare test benches;
  • Procurement of parts;
  • Participate in the physical assembly, testing and installation of equipment and prototypes;
    • Lead millwrights and contractors in assembly projects by reviewing drawings and explaining the steps;
  • Participate in project timeline & budget building.
