Job Description

Techo-Bloc is looking for a highly motivated R&D Mechanical Engineer who will bring ideas to life by designing, assembling, testing, and coordinating the installation of prototypes. If you have experience in the manufacturing sector and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and spend time in the factories to advance a project or support your team, this opportunity is for you!

Our R&D team loves to challenge the status quo and has a passion for success at work—and beyond. In this role, you will spend about 60% of your time on design. You will be at the heart of creating and continuously improving our production equipment, with a focus on innovation and efficiency.

A day in the life at Techo!

AM: The day begins with a quick meeting with the contractor who is in the factory to assemble a machine you engineered and designed. After clarifying the assembly steps with the team, you finalize a design you have been working on so that you are organized for your design review presentation at 9:30AM. It’s the first design review for this project, and you know that many things will change and that is reflected in your design decisions. You ensured to skip the fine details so that you can quickly present a preliminary 3D model to obtain further directions for your design process. Important points come up during the meeting that require changes and additions, all of which are noted down by yourself to further advance the project.

Later that morning: You go back in the factory to follow up with the assembly that started this morning. There’s a part that doesn’t fit, so you verify the drawings, measure the part, and realize the machine shop made a mistake. You contact the machine shop and ask them if they can redo the part today. The answer is “yes”, and so you pack up the part and drive to the machine shop to save time. Upon your return, you realize that your orders are late for another project that you are simultaneously working on. You do not hesitate to pick up the phone and contact the supplier.

PM: You end the day by updating your manager of all updates and changes and then proceeding to finalizing this morning’s design project while staying up to date with the assembly happening in the factory.

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop & create 3D CAD models of mechanical systems and parts for new equipment;
  • Identify improvements to be made on production lines to increase safety and efficiency;
  • Find improvement solutions;
  • Support the implementation of new processes;
  • Validate designs, calculations, simulations;
  • Perform tolerance testing of mechanical parts and assemblies;
  • Analyze & help solve technical problems;
  • Optimize current equipment to increase production efficiencies;
  • Prepare test bench marking;
  • Procurement of parts, obtaining best prices and best lead times;
  • Participate in the physical assembly of equipment and prototypes;
  • Supervise and mentor other engineers/designers and mechanics;
  • Participate in project timeline & budget building.

Qualifications

  • Having completed a University degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Must be an engineer-in-training (EIT) or member of the OIQ (Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec);
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in design, preferably in a manufacturing environment;
  • Have the capacity to work on multiple projects in a fast turnaround environment;
  • Have an excellent expertise of SolidWorks;
  • Have an innovative mind and the ability to work as a team;
  • Previous experience with conveyor systems;
  • Be available to travel occasionally in Quebec, Ontario and the USA (20% of the time);
  • Bilingual English/French – spoken and written (English is necessary to serve our customers in the USA);
  • Previous experience or knowledge in welding, machining or other metalworking will be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of the concrete industry, an asset but not required. Training will be provided.
