The Student's Society of McGill University (SSMU) is currently hiring. With over 20,000 members, SSMU's role is to represent students and to offer services since 1908.

Job Description

Responsibilities 

  • Chair the Accessibility Committee;
  • Advocate for the Accessibility recommendations of SSMU Special Researchers 
  • Serve on various SSMU and McGill committees to advance the goals of the Accessibility Policy to major stakeholders
  • Review and maintain accessible design standards for content developed by the SSMU Communications Department
  • Write research reports and engaging in university advocacy with the Vice-President (University Affairs) to achieve goals set out in the Accessibility Policy, 
  • Consult with the SSMU Governance Department on the development of new SSMU policies and statements regarding issues in accessibility
  • Work closely with the President to identify barriers to democratic participation,
  • Provide consultation to student groups, staff, and executives on issues of accessibility,
  • Consult with the SSMU Event Planning department for the planning and delivery of accessible SSMU Events
  • Interpret, amend and oversee the SSMU Accessibility Policy;
  • Oversee the reporting mechanism under the Accessibility Policy for accessibility complaints, similar to the Equity Complaints process;
  • Review governing documents, statements, and other major communications to ensure the use of accessible language; 
  • Develop resources to aid student groups in planning more accessible activities, 
  • Train and advise SSMU student groups, staff and ,executives on implementing accessibility standards in their portfolios

Qualifications

  1. Organized, independent work ethic and ability to follow through on a project;
  2. Knowledge and commitment to issues in accessibility and equity
  3. Ability to develop and deliver training programs on issues in Accessibility
  4. Ability to work effectively under pressure;
  5. Initiative and results driven;
  6. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;
  7. Organized with attention to detail;
  8. Ability to make fair and equitable decisions under pressure;
  9. Able to work independently and in a team environment;
  10. Knowledge of SSMU and McGill governance structures is an asset;
  11. Strong communication skills both in English and French are an asset.

  • Paid position: $16,28 per hour
