Job Description

The Policy & Mobilization Researcher is responsible for drafting and updating materials related to key political mobilization priorities of the External Affairs office including, but not limited to, open immigration, accessible education, Indigenous solidarity, police and prison abolition, mental health, and anti-sexual violence legislation. The Political Researcher is also responsible for developing and maintaining a political infrastructure within the SSMU.

Responsibilities

  1. Conduct short-term, ad-hoc research projects on mobilization-related political issues, as decided with the Vice-President (External Affairs), by:

    1. Collecting information, including budgetary documents, official policies, and reports, to provide a detailed overview of relevant structures and organizations;

    2. Reviewing relevant legislation, policies, statements, and plans and their evolution over time;

    3. Collecting information regarding the lived experiences of relevant groups;

    4. Identifying potential areas for improvement and opportunities for mobilization;

    5. Providing recommendations for policy amendment, advocacy, or mobilization strategy;

    6. Compiling findings into in-depth reports to be used in future advocacy and mobilization;

  2. Strategize with the Vice-President (External Affairs) about priority-setting for political infrastructure;

  3. Draft and update briefs, statements, and advocacy materials to support mobilizations based on research conducted;

  4. Develop and maintain a framework for understanding political, legal, and economic structures relevant to SSMU’s positions and mandates, such as social, housing, immigration, and education policy;

  5. Maintain an organized, accessible, and regularly updated collection of documents and materials relating to political, community, labour, and student organizing, especially in Montreal and Quebec;

  6. Support the Vice-President (External Affairs) in advocacy-related meetings, as needed;

  7. Advocate on behalf of research reports to the relevant SSMU governing bodies, and assist in any necessary drafting and amendment of SSMU policies, positions, and plans;

  8. Coordinate and collaborate with other SSMU staff members, such as the Campaigns Coordinators, Mobilisation Coordinator, and Indigenous Affairs Commissioner, as it relates to any relevant research report;

  9. Coordinate government feedback regarding active legislations and positions on the municipal, provincial, and federal levels;

  10. Preparing an exit report which indicates lessons learned, important contacts, and any salient information for the incoming Policy & Mobilisation Researcher.

  11. Engage in regular, detailed status updates with the Vice-President (External Affairs).

Working Conditions

  1. High pressure work environment from an operational, administrative, and political perspective.

  2. Independent work environment with emphasis on collaboration and regular communication.

  3. Equipment used: Computer, Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google environment (Gmail, Docs, Drive), direct action equipment (PA system, megaphone, portable furniture, tent, vehicle).

Qualifications Required

  1. Excellent written communication skills in English and French;

  2. Ability to execute tasks in a timely manner;

  3. Ability to communicate complex information in an accessible format;

  4. Strong planning, interpersonal, and organizational skills;

  5. Strong understanding of and interest in political affairs at municipal, provincial, and federal levels;

  6. Strong understanding of and interest in local grassroots organising and campaign-related political affairs;

  7. Strong experience in research and report writing in social sciences or law;

  8. Knowledge of SSMU’s political positions, as outlined in the SSMU positions book;

  9. Strong planning, interpersonal, and organizational skills;

  10. Knowledge of or interest in the Quebec student movement is an asset.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $16.28 per hour

  • Hours: On average 10 hours per week

  • Contract: May 8th, 2023 through May 31st, 2024
