Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:    

Reporting to and assisting the Vice President Finance, the Finance Commissioner is responsible for helping the finance portfolio manage the Society’s services and departments in various aspects. The Finance Commissioner is also responsible for preparing monthly budget statements, budget forecasts and facilitating service and department event operations. Event operation processes include recommending and advising services and departments on financial best practices. 

 

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:

The Finance Commissioner will receive general guidance from the Vice President (Finance) and from the General Manager, as necessary.

 

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. To help service financial officers and departmental commissioners develop transparent budgets and make recommendations as deemed necessary by the VP Finance and the General Manager concerning these budgets;
  2. To support the VP Finance in the preparation of Accounting Documents including Cheque Requests, Purchase Orders , Honorarium Payments and Funding Payments;
  3. To meet with students involved in the SSMU recognized services and departments to teach and review financial procedures, controls and assist in their implementation;
  4. To ensure adherence to internal controls and procedures over service and departments;
  5. To assist the VP Finance in the creation of SSMU’s annual budget presentation, student fee renewals and ‘Where is My Money Going?’ presentation;
  6. To identify problems and deviations from procedures and budgets of services and departments. All problems and deviations will be reported to the VP Finance;
  7. To answer questions and respond to emails directed to the Vice President (Finance) about the Students’ Society of McGill University;
  8. To chair the Finance Committee and prepare budget variance reports using Sage 300 and Microsoft Excel;
  9. Complete various tasks assigned by the Vice President (Finance) as well as requests from other SSMU executives from time to time;
  10. Other tasks related to the position.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. High pressure work environment from an administrative perspective
  2. Equipment/applications used:  Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google environment (Google docs, Gmail, Google Drive). Sage 300

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  1. Ability to execute directions in a timely manner;
  2. Ability to work with various student groups in a professional setting;
  3. Knowledgeable of SSMU and McGill University is favorable;
  4. Knowledge of SSMU and McGill University is favorable;
  5. Integrity, strong work ethic and high degree of organizational skills and accuracy;
  6. Formal Education: completing a bachelor’s in Finance,  Accounting, Economics or a related field an asset;
  7.  Experience: Experience in budget variance analysis. Experience in a field that requires strong interpersonal skills.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $17.20
  • Contract dates: August 15, 2023 to May 31st, 2024;
