Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Equity Commissioner is responsible for supporting the operationalization of the SSMU’s mandates surrounding social justice, anti-oppression, and accessibility. This includes overseeing the Equity Complaints process and the Equity Committee as well as acting as a resource for SSMU Executives, staff, representatives, and student groups as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Co-chair and coordinate the activities of the SSMU Equity Committee, including programming and advocacy efforts;
  2. Work on equity complaints and oversee the investigative procedure, including the investigation, complaint write-up, and enforcement of the complaint;
  3. Advocate for equity-related change within both the student body and the McGill University administration;
  4. Identify gaps in existing equity structures and frameworks within the SSMU and contribute to long-term, sustainable improvements, as required;
  5. Act as a resource for students and student groups on equity and inclusivity for SSMU activities;
  6. Facilitate communication and collaboration between equity-based groups on campus;

Qualifications

  1. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;
  2. Knowledge of and commitment to equity principles;
  3. Highly organized and strong attention to detail;
  4. Ability to make fair and equitable decisions under pressure;
  5. Good conflict resolution skills;
  6. Interest in student representation, advocacy, and education;
  7. Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset;
  8. Knowledge of SSMU and McGill governance structure is an asset.

  • Paid position: $16.59 /hour
  • Hours: On average 5 hours per week;
