Job Description

This Sustainability Commissioner role will involve the chosen candidate working alongside the other SSMU Sustainability Commissioner and the SSMU President to coordinate the activities of the SSMU on environmental issues and act as the chair for the Environmental Committee.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work with the VP Operations & Sustainability and co-commissioner to coordinate the activities of the SSMU on issues of sustainability, especially those relating to the environment;

  2. Interpret and review the Sustainability Policy of the SSMU;

  3. Serve as a resource for information-seeking groups when it comes to improving the sustainability of events run by student groups, the Executive Committee, and the University Centre;

  4. Co-facilitate weekly meetings with the SSMU Environment Committee members;

  5. Work closely with McGill Office of Sustainability;

  6. Supervise and assign responsibilities to the Campus Crops Coordinators;

  7. Report biweekly to the VP Operations & Sustainability;

  8. Report at least once per semester to the SSMU Legislative Council;

  9. Pursue and lead various sustainability-related projects (potentially online or in-person);

  10. Create and engage students in sustainability-related communications and events;

  11. Write a detailed exit report, detailing the execution of the aforementioned duties.

Qualifications

  • Must be an undergraduate McGill student with at least two semesters remaining;

  • Good knowledge of sustainability, specifically environmental issues;

  • Knowledge of the SSMU and McGill University;

  • Knowledge of the SSMU website, SSMU mandates and SSMU events and activities, especially relating to sustainability; 

  • Experience working in environmental policy development, organization or advocacy, especially with students or youth, is desirable;

  • Knowledge of student governance and student politics an asset;

  • Initiative and results driven, with the ability and drive to pursue and organize student-led projects;

  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail;

  • Strong social media skills an asset;

  • Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset (at least one of the two commissioners must be fluent in French).

Additional Information

Paid position: $17.20 per hour

Hours: on average 10-15 hours per week

Contract until: May 2025
