Job Description

Position Summary

The Indigenous Affairs Portfolio oversees all activities and work relating to the Indigenous Affairs Committee and its members at SSMU. The Indigenous Affairs Committee Secretary-General assists the Indigenous Affairs Commissioner in representing Indigenous students to the SSMU via the Indigenous Affairs Committee and is responsible for all activities related to engaging and coordinating the Indigenous Affairs Committee.

 

The Indigenous Affairs Committee Secretary-General is primarily responsible for coordinating communications, meeting scheduling and planning and liaising between the Commissioner and Indigenous Affairs Committee members and stakeholders and passing motions with the committee regarding important decisions relating to the Indigenous Equity Fund and SSMU Indigenous Affairs. The Secretary-General assists with community-building, public relations and communications with the ultimate goal of building stable relationships between Indigenous student groups, community stakeholders, and SSMU members. This role is well suited for candidates with a keen interest in, communications, project management and team-building with the overall goal of elevating Indigenous students on campus through the implementation of initiatives that best suit their needs.

Responsibilities 

  1. Support the Indigenous Affairs Commissioner:

    1. Attend meetings of various SSMU Committees, Groups, and Governing Bodies, on behalf of the Commissioner, as needed;

    2. Work with the Commissioner in policy drafting and review;

    3. Plan and coordinate events, campaigns, and research projects in collaboration with various SSMU Departments and Executive Portfolios;

    4. Assist with the onboarding and training of relevant staff within the Indigenous Affairs Portfolio;

    5. Prepare monthly reports to the SSMU Board of Directors; and

    6. Prepare end-of-year reports to the SSMU Legislative Council.

    1. Support the Indigenous Affairs Committee:

      1. Manage and coordinate all SSMU Indigenous Affairs Committee meetings, distribute meeting agendas and take minutes;

      2. Organize and promote meetings of the Indigenous Affairs Committee;

      3. Work with the Commissioner to onboard and support Committee members;

      4. Correspond with Committee contacts and student representatives to ensure active participation and documentation of Committee activities;

      5. Update the Indigenous Affairs Committee newsletter and make available to all Committee Members on a regular basis;

      6. Liaise with Indigenous Affairs Committee members to promote and elevate Indigenous club events and activities among various channels;

      7. Work with the Commissioner to maintain the Indigenous Affairs archives, as needed; and

      8. Chair the Indigenous Affairs Committee on behalf of the Commissioner.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  1. Indigenous students at McGill will be prioritized;

  2. Connection to urban Indigenous community;

  3. Knowledge of SSMU and McGill governance structures is an asset;

  4. Knowledge about internal Indigenous community at McGill;

  5. Experience running campaigns and organizing events;

  6. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;

  7. Highly organized and strong attention to detail;

  8. Ability to coordinate and work with large groups of individuals;

  9. Adaptability and problem-solving skills;

  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and French;

  11. Experience in communications and public relations, an asset.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $14.74
  • Contract dates: February 7th, 2022 to May 31st, 2022;
  • Application closes January 31st , 2022.
