Job Description

The Equity Portfolio Researcher will work on investigating and implementing a new structure for SSMU Equity to be remodeled after. The main responsibility is to create a strategic plan for the future of SSMU Equity as a function under the SSMU. The Researcher will be responsible for researching different models of equity or inclusivity offices at other undergraduate societies at schools similar to McGill, recommending and obtaining approval for a final strategic plan, and overseeing the implementation of such a strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Conduct research on equity portfolios that exist at other undergraduate student unions structured similarly to SSMU;

2.       Create a strategic plan detailing the features of a new SSMU Equity structure as well as a timeline on an implementation strategy;

3.       Consult with stakeholder groups on campus, such as Queer McGill, the Black Students’ Network, Right to Campus, the Union for Gender Empowerment and faculty associations, on current challenges and barriers to equity, and projects related to existing equity initiatives;

4.       Check-in with Vice-President University Affairs bi-weekly with updates as to the status of their work;

5.       Consult with Vice-President Finance to brainstorm and organize long-term funding strategies;

6.       Liaise with University administration in order to assess the equity landscape on campus as to discern existing structures and necessary changes;

7.       Prepare a report documenting legal constraints and limitations in consultation with LICM and General Manager;

8.       Create and coordinate working groups with Faculties, Clubs, and Services.

Qualifications

1. A thorough understanding of equity and anti-oppressive principles;

2. Experience in research, report-writing, and/or policy development;

3. Extensive knowledge of the existing SSMU Equity Policy, as well as other equity policies within a university context;

4. Knowledge of both SSMU and McGill’s governance structure;

5. Extensive knowledge of, or involvement with, grassroots work within student-led equity structures on campuses;

6. Experience in student advocacy, representation, and awareness-building;

7. Good organization and planning skills;

8. Experience in support work, active-listening training is an asset;

9.  Good communication skills in English; French is an asset but not required
