Bouchier is comprised primarily of Bouchier Contracting Ltd. and Bouchier Site Services Ltd., with its Head Office based in Fort McKay, Alberta and the Administrative Hub based in Fort McMurray. We are an Aboriginal owned and operated company that currently employs a workforce of more than 800 individuals.

In operation since 1998, we provide a variety of services to the Athabasca Oil Sands Region and have a presence on many of the major Oil Sands Mine Sites. Bouchier is one of the leading First Nations companies within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo that provides construction, maintenance, and general site services.

Job Description

SUMMARY

We are seeking a Commercial Manager to join our journey!  If you are the ideal candidate, you will be seasoned in project budget development, field execution budget management and change management. You will collaborate with the Project Management Team to ensure continued success of the projects assigned. If you have a solid background in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management and a strong desire to become a part of a dynamic team, you may be the perfect person to fill this position.

To lead the commercial and contractual aspects of a Project to support operations and set strategies with the objective of minimizing risks, maximizing opportunities and avoiding disputes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • As a member of a Project or Site Team advising and providing strategic input and Commercial expertise to support the Project or Site Manager to enable the
  • Maintenance and delivery of the stated profits and margins
  • Establishment of robust and consistent change control processes on the Project/Site to ensure that appropriate Contract Price adjustments are identified and agreed with the Client.
  • Identity and calculation of appropriate risk and opportunity allowances and their active management.
  • Delivery of consistent value and cost reporting, as required for Business and Project/Site control and review.
  • Maintenance of cost control systems for demonstration to clients (where required) 
  • To work with the Commercial Team within the business to support Business Group commercial issues including securing consistent commercial processes and philosophies, succession planning, staff selection, development and training and dispute management.
  • Identification and implementation of process and/or efficiency improvements.
  • To provide professional focus, identity and leadership to the Commercial Function within the project consistent with Bouchier standards and objectives.

Work Winning

  • Support Work Winning teams, where required, in identifying and quantifying risk and opportunity in bids and tenders.
  • To support, and where necessary lead, key negotiations with prospective customers, partners, contractors and sub-contractors.
  • Where required, ensure a commercial focus is maintained in established and/or developing markets

Contract Delivery

To take the lead responsibility in developing, implementing and reviewing effective commercial activity within projects and services, ensuring that:

Cash Management

  • An overview is maintained of Risk Management processes and procedures, including acting as liaison for internal audit activities.
  • Contractual imperatives (duties, obligations, notices, standards, etc.) are observed and discharged to protect Bouchier’s position and entitlements under Contract or with Insurances etc.
  • A proper view is taken of periodic performance (financial and progress) per project/area.
  • To agree strategies with the Commercial Director consistent with Bouchier objectives and timetables
  • A framework of approved practice and process in commercial activity is followed that is consistent with Bouchier standards, QMS and corporate governance
  • In conjunction with key internal ‘partners’ (e.g. Group Risk, Legal, Pre-Contract, Supply Chain, Insurance), ensure that project/site contractual and insurance issues, including disputes and claims are resolved or properly communicated to protect and further the Company’s interests and relationships.

Functional Management

  • To ensure the effective performance management and development of his/her direct reports, and the effective organization of everyone within the commercial activity on the project or site.
  • To deliver effective management information on commercial activity across the project/site, including an analysis of trends and challenges.
  • To provide a commercial appraisal of the project or site for external audit purposes.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma or University Degree in Business / Commercial / Engineering or related discipline. A comprehensive knowledge of Contract and Construction law, quantity surveying, commercial management with at least 3 years proven commercial management experience of Major Projects or operating areas.
  • A demonstrable track record of commercial success on a variety of Contract types ideally covering traditional, lump sum, Time and Material, Target Cost etc.
  • A knowledge of Bouchier’s business model, operating markets and strategy.
  • Ideally, Chartered level membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS) 
  • All applicants must have the ability to speak, read and write fluently in English

  • Contractual Claims preparation, presentation and advocacy
