Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To outline the roles, responsibilities and authorities of a Laboratory Chemist/Technician/Operator in relation to post requirements at the Hillside Smelter Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To always adhere to ALL SGS HSE standards and ALL Quality Management standards and to report any infringements or non-compliance to the Manager or his delegated person.
  • To ensure that all relevant Competence Modules / SOP’s are adhered to during the performance of all laboratory work in different sections of the laboratory.
  • Perform sample preparation, including and not limited to, weighing, drying, crushing, milling, screening as per relevant Competence Modules set of the different sections of the Laboratory.
  • To ensure that analyses of Client’s samples are conducted timeously and that customer requirements are achieved regarding the turnaround time commitments.
  •  Verification of XRD, OES, Leco, Mastersizer, all Carbon equipment, XRF, and all Sample Preparation equipment using relevant QC samples, enter results on SPCLight/ShopFloor and monitor trends.
  • Perform first line SPC trends trouble-shooting. If problems arise, escalate to the Manager or his delegated person.
  • Must know how to prepare, verify calibration standards and quality control standards as per the frequency set by the Manager or his delegated person.
  • Perform the first line maintenance of XRD, OES, Leco, Mastersizer, XRF, all Carbon equipment, all Sample Preparation equipment as per the schedule/checklists and keeping such documents up to date.
  • Must be able to interpret sample data/results and where necessary alert the Plant Engineers of possible deviations.
  • To ensure that any sample results deviations flagged out by LIMS/MES are actioned timeously and if such deviations continue to report to the Manager or his delegated person.
  • To ensure that all Plant sample results are correctly transmitted via LIMS/MES to various Plant Departments.
  • To ensure timeous communication is sent to Plant Engineers in terms of quality of plant samples received and any instruments’ challenges that might impact the turnaround time.
  • Perform Abatement Plant monitoring, sampling and analyses by using the relevant environmental sampling equipment and lab equipment.
  • To ensure that sufficient stocks/consumables of all items for the optimal functioning of the laboratory are always available.
  • To report any infringements or non-compliance by any other laboratory staff member with respect to work allocated, punctuality, or any other misdemeanor to the Manager or to his delegated person.
    • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, when possible, improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
    • Follow Manager’s or his delegated person’s clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing the duties in all sections of the laboratory.
    • Perform housekeeping to ensure that the work areas and surrounding environment are always kept clean.
  • Must be willing to work overtime/flexible hours when necessary.

SPECIFIC AUTHORITIES

  • Has authority to cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard and/or work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to a higher authority to take action.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirement - Matriculation, with Mathematics and Science.
  • Desirable - B.Sc. degree or relevant diploma in Analytical Chemistry.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in related industry/filed.
  • Able to communicate, read and write in English

Competencies

  • Must have the working knowledge of LIMS/MES system.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory Quality Management System.
  • Must have the working knowledge of Microsoft Suite
