Job Description
The lifestyle reporter finds and develops stories about people, trends and events that illuminate life in the Northwest. Areas of focus include leisure pursuits, domestic concerns, personal health and well-being and social interactions. The reporter writes for print, digital and social media.
REPORTING: Find story ideas by getting out into the community, meeting people and hearing the stories they have to tell.
WRITING: Shape fresh, current, accurate pieces for a variety of products and audiences. Bring a clear, inviting voice to items of all lengths and formats – from Tweets and blog posts to 500-word narratives to long-form profiles.
READER ENGAGEMENT: Undertake features-related contests, polls, UGC projects and other reader-engagement items and activities. Actively cultivate a following on social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
TEAMWORK: Collaborate with editors, producers and visual journalists to collectively create relevant, engaging and accurate content for multiple platforms. Support colleagues on group projects.
PRODUCTIVITY: Plan and execute a large volume of print and digital articles and projects in an intense deadline environment. Be willing and able to “spin” a 500-word lifestyle story off the news in a single day. Represent The Seattle Times at public events and via local print/broadcast outlets and social media.
Qualifications
College graduate with a degree in journalism or related field.
Daily or weekly digital or print reporting experience. Excellent grammar and language skills. Experience with web publishing and blogging software; advanced social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram).
