Job Description

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

The General Legal Counsel is the head of the corporate legal department and is responsible for the legal affairs of the entire corporation. This role includes providing legal counsel to the board of directors, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and other senior management. He or She must possess strong initiative, as well as excellent management and leadership skills and strong business acumen. This role reports to and will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors. This is a hands-on role for a collegial, practical lawyer with proven leadership skills and experience managing a lean legal function. rue21 leaders work in a nimble, lean and fast-paced environment. A love of the retail/ecommerce industry and retail in-house experience is a must. Additionally:
•Ensure all departments are properly informed of legal issues relating to their activities by consultation and communication and maintenance of sufficient familiarity of antitrust, employment, contract, construction, tort, consumer protection and product liability laws.
•Provide legal support with respect to complex business transactions including contract interpretation, attending, and leading meetings, drafting and responding to key communications, issue resolution and dispute management.
•Provide executive coaching for senior leaders across the organization through direct feedback and ongoing coaching support with a strong focus on leadership development and the goal of progressing organizational dynamics, while promoting hands-on engagement and support in all areas of human resources and the business.

Qualifications

YOU'LL HAVE:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • 12+ years of progressive legal experience with foundational training in a well-respected law firm followed by in-house retail company experience.
  • Bar: Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state with the ability to obtain a Limited In-House Corporate Counsel License in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Ideal candidate will be either a current General Counsel or a Deputy General Counsel with diverse legal responsibilities.
  • Prior retail experience in Employee Relations is required.
  • You will have proven business savvy and strategic vision, as well as experience with commercial contracts, corporate governance, finance, privacy, marketing, regulatory/legal compliance matters, labor and employment, litigation management, and intellectual property management (protection of trademarks, brands).
  • Open Availability and flexibility to work according to the needs of the business
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications
  • Strong, professional, and effective verbal and written communication skills
