Job Description

With the current expansion of the underground, we are looking for someone to effectively design and execute mine infrastructure projects to allow for continuous operation of the mine. Specifically, oversee construction engineering, ventilation, water management, electrical, and projects for the underground site within the Technical Services team. The role is for a Senior Engineer or Engineer depending on qualifications and experience of the candidate.  

  • Determine requirements for pumping and storage facilities of mine fresh water and dewatering systems. Assist or lead designs of pump stations, sumps, etc. Generate a pumping model for the two systems in Pumpsim. 

  • Evaluate current and future mine electrical needs. Determine specifications and locations for underground substations and their associated infrastructure and accessories. 

  • Evaluate current and future mine ventilation requirements with the aid of Ventsim, which includes but is not limited to ventilation surveys, modelling, fan sizing, bulkhead and regulator designs, etc. 

  • Assist with paste pumping requirements and studies. 

  • Develop a three-month rolling construction schedule for the mine construction crew using Deswik.Sched. 

  • Create construction plan drawings for major and minor infrastructure works. 

  • Perform any construction engineering tasks or designs that may be necessary for the continued operation of the mine. 

  • Write Approval for Expenditures (AFE) for various capital such as infrastructure, equipment, etc. 

  • Collaborate and assist with the Life of Mine Infrastructure requirements, designs, and planning. 

  • Any other assigned task by the Underground Engineering Superintendent. 

  • Develop typical construction drawings for underground infrastructure ie. Sumps, substations, workshops. 

 

Qualifications

  • Required – 4-year degree in Mining Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or 10+ years of relevant practical experience in managing mining projects 

  • Required for Senior Engineer – 8+ years' relevant experience in managing complex mining projects 

  • Required for Engineer – 3-7 years' relevant experience in assisting or managing mining projects and participating in complex ones 

  • Preferred - experience in managing or supporting construction project management including writing AFE’s 

  • Preferred - experience in managing or supporting ventilation and pumping projects 

  • Preferred - experience in managing or supporting ventilation audits and addressing issues with the creation execution plans 

  • Preferred - experience in managing or supporting electrical projects 

  • Preferred - experience in managing or supporting underground construction engineering and planning 

  • Required - experience in using CAD programs such as Deswik or Vulcan, and scheduling software such as Deswik.Sched 

  • Preferred experience with Ventsim and Pumpsim 

Physical Requirements: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see. 

  • Must be able to work shift work with 12-hour shifts. 

  • Must be able to climb 50’ vertical ladder sections unaided. 

  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the workday. 

  • Work is in a both underground and surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity. 

  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hart hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
