Job Description

Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship-University of Ottawa Heart Institute The University of Ottawa Heart Institute offers a dynamic and comprehensive 1 year clinical cardiac anesthesiology fellowship. We enjoy a strong national reputation with our former fellows integrated across all academic cardiac anesthesiology practices in Canada and many abroad.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is one of Canada’s largest cardiac centers. With over 1700 yearly cardiac surgical cases, the largest TAVI volume in Canada, an expanding structural cardiology program, and an active MCS and cardiac transplantation program, and a 26 unit cardiac surgical ICU, we are well suited to meet all of your academic fellowship needs. Patient care and clinical teaching remains the predominant strength of our program. With dedicated medical educators and some of the most advanced medical imaging and surgical technologies available, we are well equipped to keep pace with the rapid expansion of cardiac care in the next decade.

In 2025 and beyond, we will continue to support the expansion of percutaneous interventional procedures, expansion minimally invasive surgical techniques including robotic surgeries, as well as greater use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in complex cardiac care. Our structural cardiology program continues to evolve beyond our current aortic and mitral interventions, we remain committed to providing advanced imaging using real time 3D echo guidance to support its expansion. In addition, there is a clear institutional focus on minimally invasive surgery for both coronary and valvular disease which includes an expanding robotic assisted surgical program. Finally, in keeping with the trends observed in other large tertiary cardiac care centres, we are anticipating an overall expansion our MCS and ECMO programs to keep pace with evolving complex cardiac care. These three specific areas will become the future focus of complex tertiary cardiac care and we currently have the technology, knowledge and expertise which allows our fellowship to evolve with these changes well beyond the next decade. While clinical care is our strength, research remains an integral component of our academic mission. We currently enjoy ongoing research collaborations with several of our former fellows. Ongoing research areas includes postoperative AFib prevention strategies, long term critical care morbidity and quality of life measures, predictors of RV failure. Although publication is not a requirement of the fellowship, all fellows are expected to complete a QA project during their fellowship year at UOHI.
