Sustainability Intern

  • Intern

Company Description

We are looking for a Sustainability intern for our global Sustainability and Innovation team

Henning Larsen is an international design studio with strong Nordic roots, where curiosity and Design with Knowledge are our main principles. Are you a student interested in joining our mission to create more sustainable built environments and explore contemporary technologies? For the spring semester we are looking for a candidate who have a good understanding of environmental sustainability, and bring skills in performing environmental simulations, with good background in computational design, to support our holistic approach to sustainability.

As our new intern you will be part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary group of architects, engineers, PhDs, computational designers, and sustainability experts working on shaping experiences of human interaction through advanced digital methodologies and environmental analysis. Our ambition is to pioneer sustainable change through our work—our projects aim not just for best practice, but next practice.

About the internship

Joining our NYC office, you will be part of a company working with international projects of all scales and sizes. We offer intern positions for 6 months, with the opportunity for extension. The goal is for you to be able to work independently with site analysis across environmental parameters, material assessments for carbon, and design optimization for passive strategies and energy efficiency.

Start date: February 2025. The internship is paid.

Job Description

What are we looking for?

For the spring semester, we are looking for interns with a passion for developing tools, methodologies, and solutions for a more sustainable holistic design. The ideal candidate has an architectural or engineering background and has advanced analytical, communicational, and graphic skills. While we don’t expect expertise in every area, enthusiasm for learning and contributing to both computational design and LCA domains would be appreciated.

You may contribute within the following focus areas:

  • Microclimate and simulations: Familiarity with CFD, daylight and/or UTCI simulations is a plus.

  • Computational/generative design and data analysis: Interest in scripting and digital tools to optimize design processes. Familiarity with Python, C#, Grasshopper and/or game engines is a plus.

  • Circular economy and decarbonization: Work with tools and methodologies to inform material selection and design scenarios, integrating LCA calculations to evaluate environmental impacts of buildings and components. Knowledge of tools such as One Click LCA is highly welcome.

  • Material knowledge exploration: Support research and dialogue with manufacturers, EPD data collection, and sustainable material assessments.

  • Early-stage assessments and reporting: Structure inputs and quantify design solutions; support the team in gathering and organizing sustainability data and communicating effective results to our design teams and clients.

  • Illustrations and Graphics: Demonstrated grasp of illustration softwares (Creative Cloud suite), and ability to quickly arrive at creative graphics for communicating sustainability impacts is desirable.
