BBH Barn Summer Internship Program - 2024

  • Intern

Company Description

About BBH:

Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) is a world-famous creative agency that makes jaw-dropping, thumb-stopping, eye-opening work for brands across the globe.

Our first ad for Levi’s showed a herd of white sheep looking in one direction and one black sheep looking in the opposite direction. The picture was accompanied by a simple statement that read 'When the World Zigs, Zag'. That’s where we got our logo and our guiding philosophy - the belief in difference - zagging - and it’s how we’ve changed brands and businesses. Why? Because it’s easy to zig, to go with the grain. It feels safe. It feels like the sensible thing to do. But the greater risk is failing to stand out. Normal is boring. Don’t let boring become normal. We believe in the power of difference to make a difference.

Our goal is a simple one: make the best work in the world. That’s where you come in. We need rebels, dreamers, thinkers, mathematicians, makers, artists, visionaries, doers, observers, the different and the unreasonable. We need Black Sheep. People who want to make hearts flutter and minds flip, who can change businesses and culture. People who want to make a difference, come here for something different.

Job Description

BARN:

We are looking for enthusiastic, committed, creative and interesting Black Sheep who want to join our flock. You don’t need any previous advertising experience or specific skills: we’re more interested in the unique perspective you can bring. We believe what makes you different, those quirks and traits that make you tick, is what makes BBH special, and makes the work better. If you feel like you’re a Black Sheep, we want to hear from you.

BARN is a 10-week program where you will learn the ins and outs of advertising and ad agency life as part of one of our incredible Creative, Strategy, Account Management, or Program Management teams. You could be thinking of ideas, writing punchy headlines, helping keep projects on track, designing a billboard, doing research, or anything in between. To ensure you have a thorough and diversified internship experience we will make sure that you have the opportunity to work on a mix of actual client projects, get 1:1 mentoring, and take specialized training sessions, tailored and presented by BBH’ers. All in all, you’ll have access to all of our incredible people and some pretty cool perks of New York agency life.

The Application:

In true Black Sheep fashion, we want you to get creative and Show us your Zag. Please attach your resume and responses to the below questions as a PDF file. We look forward to getting to know you!

  1. Tell us about yourself. How will your background help you bring a Black Sheep perspective to our work*?

  2. Why do you want to join BBH’s Barn program and what do you hope to get out of it?

  3. We believe in the power of difference to make a difference. What is one thing that you love that nobody else seems to understand? Convince us why we should love it too.

  4. When the world zigs, we zag. Pick an ad campaign that's a "zig", and tell us how you would’ve done a "zag" instead?

  5. What discipline are you interested in? (Creative Copy, Creative Art, Account Management, Program Management or Strategy) - Descriptions below.

*At BBH we are all creative people regardless of our discipline. We encourage you to share something you’ve created or worked on that you’re proud of (poem, video, song, cake, hobby, team project, etc). If you wish to include a video, you can post unlisted on YouTube or on your personal website and include the link in your application.

Our Disciplines:

Creative: Our creatives work in teams with a Copywriter and an Art Director. Together they come up with ideas and then bring them to life. We are looking to see a collection of work that demonstrates your creativity. If you are applying for either Creative position, we ask that you include your portfolio (we aren’t looking for a polished and perfect portfolio, but want to see how you express your creativity). Please indicate which position on the Creative team you’re interested in:

  • Creative (Copy): We think of the ideas in tandem with our AD partners through a brainstorming and idea concepting process. Then, when it’s time to develop our creative idea, we take care of everything that involves words: idea writeups, headlines, scripts, social copy, and more. Through our ideas, we turn the client's business problems and the strategist's insights into creative solutions.
  • Creative (Art): We also think of ideas, alongside our CW partner, through a series of brainstorming and creative development sessions. We then bring those ideas to life through visuals. Anything from the images used to bring a script on a slide to life, to the design of a billboard, and more. If you often find yourself sketching your ideas on the back of napkins or in your notebook - you can use those skills on the creative team. And if you have any basic knowledge of the Adobe creative suite, even better (though not required)!

Account Management: Our account team represents the agency to our clients while also representing our clients within the agency. They are the project drivers juggling budgets and timelines. As brand guardians, they know the brand like the back of our hand, and ensure the work is always on brief and on brand. Despite popular belief, they rarely wear suits.

Program Management: Program Managers are responsible for the health and quality of client projects, focusing on maintaining budgets, delivering efficiency and quality, mitigating risk and supporting your internal team. If you’re an organized problem solver - this could be the path for you.

Strategy: Clients come to us wanting to get from Point A to Point B. But there are just so many possible paths. That's where the Strategy team comes in, arming ourselves with research and intuition, plotting the path ahead and getting the team excited about it. If you love sitting behind a two-way mirror eavesdropping on focus groups, or stalking social media to find the latest trend - this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
