Company Description
Who We Are
AMS is a nuclear engineering services company based in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a mission to ensure the safe operation of the worldwide nuclear fleet. Founded in 1977 as a spinoff of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, AMS has nearly 50 years of experience developing innovative testing technologies and engineering solutions that help nuclear facilities maintain safe, reliable, and compliant instrumentation and control (I&C) systems.
What We Do
AMS supports nuclear facilities worldwide with specialized expertise in years in the areas of instrumentation and control (I&C) system testing, digital I&C qualification, EMI/RFI troubleshooting, cable aging management, nuclear instrumentation system troubleshooting, wireless technology implementation, rod control system testing, online monitoring for condition-based maintenance, and custom data acquisition equipment development. Our engineers work across all U.S. nuclear power plants and many in Europe and Asia as well as research reactors and national security installations to ensure systems perform safely, reliably, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
What It’s Like to Work Here
At AMS, you’ll join a collaborative team of experts across nuclear, electrical, mechanical, computer, and materials engineering. We invest heavily in research and development, encourage creativity in problem-solving, and provide hands-on opportunities to contribute from day one. Many employees build long careers here because they’re able to learn continuously, take on diverse technical challenges, and work in an environment guided by teamwork, respect, and shared purpose.
Job Description
AMS is seeking an Engineering Data Analyst Co-Op to support engineering teams working with sensor measurement data from operating nuclear power plants. This position focuses on applying structured data analysis techniques to real-world engineering problems in a regulated, safety-critical environment.
This position will primarily support AMS’s Online Monitoring (OLM) activities. The OLM program applies data-driven, condition-based techniques to evaluate the performance, reliability, and long-term health of critical plant instrumentation. Rather than relying solely on periodic manual testing, OLM uses sensor measurement data collected from plant instrumentation to assess instrument behavior over time.
Co-Op participants will be trained on the fundamentals of OLM and will apply those concepts while performing engineering data analysis tasks. The Engineering Data Analyst Co-Op reports to the OLM Group Manager and works under the guidance of experienced AMS engineers to analyze plant sensor measurement data, support engineering evaluations, and contribute to technical documentation using established procedures.
Co-Op participants are trained to perform defined, repeatable components of engineering data analysis using proprietary software and documented procedures. With training, Co-Op participants are expected to perform a substantial portion of assigned data analysis tasks, while senior engineers provide technical oversight, review, and final approval.
What You’ll Do
- Develop a foundational understanding of AMS’s Online Monitoring methodology through written and hands-on training and qualification assessments
- Perform engineering data analysis on sensor measurement data from operating nuclear power plants
- Support data preparation and review activities by:
- Entering and organizing datasets
- Reviewing information for completeness and consistency
- Helping identify potential data gaps under engineer guidance
- Assist in compiling data and supporting information for:
- OLM amenability evaluations
- OLM limits and supporting technical documentation
- Contribute to draft sections of engineering reports
- Receive training and hands-on experience with:
- Proprietary engineering analysis software
- Structured engineering workflows and procedures
- Quality assurance documentation and review processes
- No prior experience with these tools is required as training will be provided
- Support quality assurance (QA) activities by:
- Executing predefined test steps
- Documenting results clearly and accurately
- Reporting discrepancies or issues to engineering staff
What You’ll Gain
- Hands-on experience analyzing sensor measurement data from operating nuclear power plants
- Exposure to applied engineering work in a regulated environment
- Training in disciplined analysis and quality-controlled workflows
- Mentorship from experienced engineers and technical leaders
- A strong foundation for future full-time engineering roles
- Opportunity to return for additional co-op terms or be considered for full-time employment after graduation
Who We’re Looking For
- Professional and dependable contributor who demonstrates reliability, accountability, and alignment with AMS core values while operating in a structured, safety-critical engineering environment.
- Eager and curious learner who actively engages in training, asks thoughtful questions to clarify technical concepts and procedures, and builds foundational understanding through hands-on application.
- Coachability-driven team member who accepts feedback constructively, applies it to improve work quality, and values review and oversight as part of delivering accurate, high-quality engineering output.
- Clear and proactive communicator who shares progress, questions, and challenges in a timely manner to support team coordination and project execution.
- Initiative-oriented problem solver who takes ownership of assigned work while recognizing when to seek guidance to maintain technical accuracy, compliance, and quality standards.
- Developing technical foundation with growing understanding of nuclear power plant systems, instrumentation and control systems, and applicable regulatory and industry standards.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an engineering or technical degree program, such as:
- Mechanical Engineering
