The role 

The Technical Branch Subject Matter Expert – Electrical contributes to complex construction topics at HPC and helps us make sure we continue to deliver technical excellence for the project. 

The successful applicant will be a key member of the wider Technical Branch of the Joint Design Office [JDO], operating as part a team responsible for resolving critical, cross discipline design issues and engaging multidisciplinary specialists. The role offers exposure to a broad spectrum of technical topics across the project, driving resolution of technical issues, strengthen engineering delivery and enhance resilience of the JDO by proactively mitigating key project engineering risks. 

  • Provide expert engineering advice to all permanent works contracts across the site in a reactive and proactive manner, ensuring compliance with NNB specifications and relevant technical codes, standards, conventional and nuclear safety case requirements, delivering technically sound solutions that prevent delays and non-conformances 

  • Collaborate closely with construction teams, installation contractors, and turnkey supply partners to maintain alignment with design intent and assure quality delivery throughout the lifetime of the plant 

  • Demonstrate technical excellence, input to on-site JDO processes including evaluation and completion of non-conformances (NCR), requests for information (RFI), and field change requests (FCR) and contribute to technical safety case substantiation where required, supporting the wider JDO function and NNB delivery 

  • Review key technical documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and robustness of safety justification 

  • Represent the Client Organisation on site, providing real-time advice, foresight, and solutions to field issues, design integration challenges, and non-conformities including those relating to internal and external hazards 

  • Engage with internal and external Regulators as required to support assurance and oversight of technical compliance and safety 

  • Champion the identification, evaluation, and introduction of technical innovations and improvements at HPC, supporting enhanced efficiency, quality, safety, and delivery outcomes 

  • Support the upskilling of engineers by sharing expertise, providing guidance on best practice, and embedding lessons learned to strengthen technical capability across the project. 

 
Requirements of the role 

  • Be an organised motivated individual able to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of stakeholders 

  • Be proactive in chasing delivery and performance of others and ensuring accountability for technical outcomes 

  • Attend and contribute to meetings and technical reviews when required 

  • Build working relationships with JDO stakeholders, delivery teams and construction partners to facilitate technical resolution 

  • Support the identification and development of standardised technical solutions across common field challenges and embed these into best practice 

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by capturing lessons learned and identifying trends in technical queries to strengthen long-term project delivery and safety 

  • Demonstrable evidence of problem solving and stakeholder management 

  • Experience of onsite engineering delivery 

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering 

  • Experience of design, installation and modification of electrical engineering systems, services, equipment and components, from VHV distribution to EMC and low voltage instrumentation 

  • Working knowledge of relevant British & European standards, construction, and design codes/guidelines (a strong command of the relevant parts of BS 7671, the 18th edition of the IET Wiring Regulations is essential) 

  • Strong communication skills in English 

  • Knowledge of Technical French Language is an advantage.
