About the Information Technology Team

The team is a collaborative and dynamic group of 12 employees, including an IT Director, a Senior Network Engineer, three Network Administrators, two desktop support and trainer employees, a Database Manager and Database Analysist, and a three-person Litigation Support Team. The team is dedicated to providing end users with a comprehensive package of applications, Litigation Support and Computer Forensic tools essential to delivering efficient and timely legal services to the City and County of San Francisco. The conducts ongoing research of hardware and software developments; identifies technologies and knowledge base resources appropriate for existing and anticipated office needs; effectively integrates equipment and software into the daily workflow; and facilitates productivity and user satisfaction through effective customizations and timely support.

About the Journey Level IT Network Engineer Position

The Office seeks a journey-level IT Network Engineer working under supervision to implement major technology projects, such as cloud backup, security for Office 365 applications, and securing mobile devices. The selected candidate will analyze, plan, implement, monitor, and troubleshoot the most complex work involving wide area networks (WANs), cloud computing technology, and the physical and logical components that integrate with the Office's network systems; provide ongoing support for other IT personnel; develop and interpret policies, procedures, and standards for current and new IT applications; and make day-to-day technical decisions that affect end-users and system efficiencies. The selected candidate will plan, schedule and coordinate installation and maintenance of network enhancements and additional features with other City departments, vendors and contractors. This position requires excellent communication and collaboration internally within the Office at all levels up to and including the Executive Team, as well as with other City partners and vendors. This position requires a can-do customer service approach focused on responsive problem solving and support.

The selected candidate will be expected, as part of a rotation of IT Team members, to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.

Appointment typePermanent Exempt (PEX), special project-based position limited to no more than 3 years in duration. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:  An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].

    Experience: One (1) year of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.

    Substitution: Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/r forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Two years or more of experience in the job responsibilities described above
    • Recent experience with SharePoint design and development
    • Recent experience with Enterprise Network Directories including experience in Microsoft Active Directory
    • Intermediate experience with infrastructure-based processes such as: monitoring, capacity planning, facilities management, performance tuning, asset management, disaster recovery and high availability

    Salary and Benefits: The position has a ten-step salary scale ranging from $119,626-$150,488. The successful candidate will be placed at a salary step based on years of experience and additional relevant degrees, certifications, credentials or skills.
